I'm new to this forum so please don't shoot me down in flames if this has been discussed to death. I went to the Tech pages and din't find too much. I have an 05 F-250 PSD. The only mod to it is a SuperChips tuner. I use the Economy program. My goal isn't to have a screamer; just a good truck that performs and gets reasonably good mileage. Rather than buy 3 Motorcraft air filters each year, I'd like to add an after-market filter. Basically, I just want a filter that works as well as factory, can be cleaned, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I've read good and bad about all of them except the True Flow filters. Have any of Y'all used True Flow? Sorry for the long post.
The factory filter willl last you a lot longer than 1 year, unless you are putting on some serious miles or are in some nasty stuff....I went with an AFE Proguard 7 filter stage 1. It is as close as you can get to stcok looking and AFE uses a synthetic material instead of oil like a K&N. My oil analisis report (I have had only one since my new filter) the PPM is actually less than my stock filter, so I know its working well. I believe Airraid makes a similar filter that uses a syn material. I would stay away from the K&N's and teh oil type filters, just my opinion.
Thanks for the info. I put about 35K miles per year on it. I could probably get away with 1 change a year but when I had my 01 7.3 PSD, my oil analysis came back from Blackstone one time and they said I needed to change my air filter. It's kind of embarassing for the oil guy to tell you to change your air filter.
I would stay with the factory filter. It keeps the the dirt out of your engine. I have worked on literally hundreds of 6.0 trucks and many of the trucks that have aftermarket filters have evidence of dirt ingestion. Sometimes A LOT of dirt. It's an expensive engine and the factory filter works well.
It seems as though all of the aftermarket Cold Air Kits cause dirt ingestion, at least according to the Ford techs. I have a replacement aftermarket cartridge style with the zoodad mod. We did a really cool test with a remote thermometer. We checked the air intake tube interior temp with a stock filter, an AFe and the replacement with the zoodad. In the last test the intake air at 65 mph was almost 40 degrees cooler than the AFe and 20 degrees cooler than factory. It seems that the AFe takes all of it's air from under the hood and suffers the increase due to engine heat. The factory filter doesn't flow enough to overcome the air tube heat.
I installed a Volant Cold Air Intake on my 04. It is a true cold air intake. It pulls the air from the same place as the factory filter. I also have the zoo dad mod. I noticed a difference right away with the throttle response and power. Also I towed my 10,000lb trailer to California from Denver with stock filter. I averaged 11.5 mpg at 70mph the entire way. Installed intake in California. Returned to Colorado via Flagstaff. Pretty much uphill most of the way at 70+ mph, and still averaged 11.5, with lower EGT's. I also noticed that when I am not towing and on the highway that there was a reduction in RPM's and noice from the engine. Almost like it didn't have to work as hard.
The stock filter for the 6.0L motor will go more than 50,000 miles.
There was a revised service schedule that came out over 1 or 2 years ago... and the filter minder works and should be used/trusted. I just go with the 50,000 mile interval for the mixed driving I do.
In the end, the stock filter saves money, is moisture resistent due to blue synthetic fibers that are used (Napa sells the white cellulose version that is cheaper, but still a Donalson filter)... and no warrenty issues to ever be concerned about... so stock is the way to go as this filter design and technology is second to none... one just has to be willing to give up bragging rights to having an aftermarket filter/intake to brag about... so I brag about my M1A1 tank designed & tested Donalson air filter!!!!!
A lot of owners of the 6.0's really feel the stock system is best, not me. AT 8000 mile si replaced the stock filter even though Ford says run it for 30,000K! I got 2-3 PSI boost increase, in my opinion the stock filter filterts really well it;s also restirctive a lot faster than folsk wnat you to think especially Donaldson. When the AFE Stage I Pro Guard 7 came out I installed one of them and got an extra 2-3 more PSI boost so that shows me it is flowing more air than a clean Donaldson as well. Now the Stage I and II are closed intake system (the Stage I uses the Ford front and rear sections, the Stasge II is all new everything) and pull only cold air, their newest part was built to compete with the other open element filter systems is not a true cold air system. So be careful which one you get.
By the way the Pro Guard 7 elements have been tested to stop dirt within 1/2 of 1%, that's right 1/2 of 1% nearly nothing, so that will keep your mind at rest about dirt intrusion etc. If you have any questions on these systems call us we'll be glad to help you.
Word of advice; I just took my truck in for a check engine light issue and the service writer requested that I bring in my stock air filter system or purchase a new one. I brought in the fatory system, they will install it free of charge and explained that the after market systems throw off some sensors? I've had the system for 20K miles and this same dealer has repaired my truck on several occasions with my Afe kit. Just thought I'd share, keep the stock system handy!
I ran a tru flo in 05 Dodge Diesel, worked great in that truck. I drive on alot of dusty jobsites and dirt roads and I never had a problem with dust in my intake tube. But just like any other oiled filter you have to watch how much you use when reoiling. As how it would work on a Ford I dont know how there set up works.
You never will find dirt in the intake tube, there is nothing to make it stay there. It's a smooth clean tube. The dirt will need some heavy grease in the tube to be "caught" as it enters. The 7.3's had a crank case vent just prior to the turbo, it was great for showing how 4 layer gauze filters and foam filters passed a large quantity of dirt. Try it for 10,000 miles and then run your fingers thru it and feel the grit.
I too was told today that the AFE 7 will void my warrenty... Any support on this? Should I contact AFE directly? My 04 350 went in with a broken injector which i was told was covered under warrenty, but if there is other dammage due to the factory air filter system removed it may be void.

The factory Donaldson Air Filter is on of the best on the market. Aftermarket systems can lead to problems with your engine in the form of dusting of the the turbo and engine which leads to premature turbo and engine failure. Ford can deny warranty on any items damaged when running and after market air filter system.
Basically the only way to increase air flow over a stock system is to allow more dirt in due to larger openings in the filtering media. The guys on this forum that run heavily modded trucks (much more than tuners and exhaust) will tell you, you will get no benefit in performance by going with an aftermarket air filter system.
So my advice to you is to re-install the factory Donaldson system and stick with it, for best performance and filtration. This will keep all of your warranty intact. BTW the warranty on these engines is for 100,000 miles.
