My wife and I bought a 06 Escape back in October and I have noticed here lately it sounds like the valves are rattling. Is that what pinging is or is this something different? The vehicle only has 10500 miles. What needs to be done to the vehicle?
If you are referring to a "rattling" noise under acceleration it is likely pinging. One way to check if a noise is due to pinging or premature detonation is to fill the vehicle with a higher octane fuel and see if it goes away. The manufacturers say that light occassional pinging is not harmful but since you vehicle is still under warranty you might want to take it to the dealer and have them check it out. Pinging usually occurs under load (when towing) and/or during the hottest weather. Sometimes and adjustment in the fuel mapping fixes the problem. You should be able to use 87 octane without pinging. BTW, I have started to get some light pinging in really hot weather when towing with my '02 Tribute. This is probably due to some carbon buildup in the cylinder heads that is slightly increasing the effective compression ratio after 100,000 miles.
I never had any issues with my 02 V6 but my 05 I4 is pinging this year (47k miles). No codes and the dealership said I needed PCM reflash/injector cleaning. Then when it didn't change they said it's normal. I've checked out every sensor, did a seafoam treatment to decarb and the only thing that has helped is switching to a step colder plug. It pings under light and moderate acceleration at 40+mph when the outside temp is above 85 degrees. Higher octane didn't make any difference in mine.
If yours is pinging like mine, there's nothing Ford will do. They've got these engines running too lean and the timing is controlled by the PCM. The only real fix would be to buy an XCal tuner for $400 and override their timing.

My '01 V6 does not ping at all but my wife is driving an '06 V6 rental right now and it pings like a screw in a tin can whenever you give it gas. It is horrible to say the least.I would take it back and make them address it before your warranty runs out. Not to mention the embarrassment of driving around like that.
