Escape Trans. slipping?

any input would help guys, I just bought a 2001 Escape, 2wd, V-6, 3.0L,auto, with 65,000 miles, while driving 40-55 mph, at first thought it was a shudder in trans, but after more attention seems the tranny is slipping, example, while in cruise at 45mph, the tack. will raise up to about 1800/2000 from 1500 rpm for about 3 seconds then fall back to 1500 again at which time you can feel a slight bump in the drive train, does this all through the 40-55 mph range.and happens about once a min, very annoying! now in the 55-75 mph it seems not to do it at all, I have tried driving with out the overdrive also and seems to be slightly better but still does the same thing, I have not tried changing tranny fluid yet, ....thanks for any advice!!

Does sound like a trans slipping...have you checked the condition of the fluid? if the trans has in fact been slipping, the fluid will appear brown and smell burnt. It seems
early for transmission problems. Perhaps the vehicle was abused by a previous owner??

Bluestang...the fluid looks perfect, have not noticed a burnt smell, Im thinking the previous owner could have been hard on it, althought there was never a tow hitch on this vehicle...I have been told that the dealer can check trans with there computer, might have to let them check it out....thanks, greg

Yes, the dealer can check what is called "abuse management" with their scanner. However, most will not because of the legal implications and continued legal battles over who actually owns that data. For instance, every OBD II car has a "black box" so to speak that records from a minimum of 10 minutes prior to airbag deployment. The question is: does the government have the right to check that data at will? How about when they pull you over for a traffic violation? Can they then pull the data from your PCM to find out everything about how you were driving? Bottom line is that the information is there in the computer, but you may not be able to get the dealer to pull it out for you.

Changing fluid would be a good thing to try. It's most likely the torque converter clutch slipping. If that doesn't fix it, it may need a new converter or even a pump replacement.

Sounds a lot like a problem I had a few years ago with an Aerostar. I my case it was a flaky throttle position sensor causing the PCM (computer) to intermittently release the Torque Convertor Clutch
then reapply it (check engine light never came on, but the fault was stored in the pending codes section). I believe the coolant temperature sensor can do the same thing. I'd get the codes pulled and go from there.

Amervtwin, I have a 2001 V6 with 69,000 miles and when I feirst picked mine up I noticed some flakey behavior in that same speed range. i would describe mine as "hunting" for the correct gear. It went away completely after a fluid power flush. I would perform it if it hasen't been done already. One way to check would be to look at the fluid lines coming out of the tranny cooler. Look for either a 2nd set of hose clamps (the lube places rarely remove the old one completely but almost always replace it with a new one) or look for an adjustable hose clamp (threaded) since the factory one is a "pinch-on" type. Regardless, it is also possible that the PO put the wrong fluid in such as Mercon V so I would flush it anyway, it is a relatively inexpensive procedure that could save you big down the road. I paid $60 at Valvoline Quick Lube.
