just bought a 93 bronco xlt but i dont have the owners manuel, can someone tell me what the towing capacity is? i want to see if it can tow my boat n trailer of 3500 - 4000 pounds. will i have problems??? thanx
Yes, no problem. Be careful when you drop the tailgate that is does not hit something. I asked the same question for the same reason and forgot the answer.
When towing I try to be gentle on the transmission as a rebuid cost $2500-3000. The E4OD is very tough but expensive. If I think it will downshift going up a hill I will turn OD off early and avoid the hard shift. I also turn cruise control off in rolling hills and vary the speed. Tire size and gearing may be different on yours but everything is stock on mine so if the RPM is under 1900 I turn OD off and also if a heavy throttle is required. When in doubt turn OD off. Even though I have factory tow package I still check the mechanical temp gauge more often when towing. Heat will kill a transmission. You may want to use 4wd when launching your boat. If you have auto hubs be sure to back up 20ft after going back to 2h to disengage the hubs. You may want to put information about your Bronco in your signature for others to join in and help you better.
As a general rule....do not tow with overdrive engaged. Few vehicles tow better in overdrive.
A good test to determine whether you should tow in overdrive is to establish a steady cruise speed without overdrive, note your throttle position, then engage overdrive, if you need to push the throttle more to keep the same speed then you should turn off the overdrive. If on the other hand throttle position remains the same or needs a reduction to maintain the same speed then you can cruise with overdrive engaged. Keep in mind that conditions change on the road and with that in mind it is best to leave OD off.
The biggest problem with towing in overdrive is that many people are not attentive enough to notice when the transmission is hunting between 3rd and OD. Shifting back and forth between gears like that is really bad and will kill a tranny very quickly. As long as it's not hunting, it's fine to leave it in OD. fleafami's advice about the throttle position is very good.
