My son and I are in the process of rebuilding our 1969 F100. I am not mechanically inclined and do not understand all of the terminology. Can someone explain what a 9" rear is and how I can determine if the rear I have is a 9".
Ford introduced the 9-inch differential in 1957 and it has been the industry leader ever since. The ability to remove the center chunk greatly simplifies maintenance and modification and vertually no special tools are needed to set up gears and bearings. The nine is often confused with the eight since they appear similar. First confirm your center section (chunk) is held in place by a circular pattern of nuts on studs that face the front of the vehicle. Taker a close look at the fastener at the 6 o'clock position. If you can take it off with a socketwrench, it is an eight incher. If you must use a box wrench because the pinion shaft housing is in the way, it is a niner. Hope this helps.
The nine inch rear refers to the diameter of the ring gear in the differential. Nine inch diameter ring gear. GM rears are identified by sayings like 10 bolt or 14 bolt these refer to the number of bolts on the rear cover. JFYI
the nine inch rear is vertuly industructable it is identifed by the absense of an remvable inpection plate on the back of the differential or center section
