9" rear end

I have a 9" rear end that was spose to come out of a `78. it has 28 spline axels. i thought the truck rear ends were spose to have 31. can anyone clearify that for me. thanks.

They came in both.

28-spline count axles were usually found on F100s.

Is there any way to tell this without removing the gears/axles?

Kevinstang's Ford Nine Inch Differential Page + is a good resource, a lot of reading though.

Although my F100 had 31 splines and my 76 had 31 splines as well.

It might be a weird coincidence, but my 31 spline axles say 31T on the flanger face.
