My '92 Bronco 5.8 L stutters on take off and will not exceed 45 MPH. I have been chasing this problem for weeks and am in need of advice. My local Ford dealer recommended $3000 in repairs for just about everything that wasnt OEM I ended up replacing the PCM and in still feels like it a cylinder missing. Could this be the fuel pump or injectors or does anyone have any other suggestions?
Welcome to FTE and the Big BRonco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate info. we can muster.
Ok, you have a 92. Have you pulled the EEC-IV computer codes? Did the dealer pull them? If so, what codes were being thrown? If not, don't do another thing until you get the codes. Replacing the PCM is an expensive investment especially if it was done without pulling the codes first. The old unit may have nothing wrong with it. Once you have the codes troubleshooting will be much much simpler. A Haynes manual or www.fordfuelinjection.com will shed a lot more light on the procedure for pulling codes.
It would probably be a good idea to check everything included in a standard tune up as well. I hate to suggest something that sounds so obvious, but you would be surprised how many people miss little things like that. I developed a shutter in my 93 and tried everything under the sun to fix it, and it turned out that I had a few spark plug wires that were nearly burned in half. Let us know what you've tried to fix the problem so far so that we don't recommend things that you've already tried.Good luck
do what grey said. also check fuel pressure at the rail. but this sounds to me like a clogged Cat converter. If you can upbolt the Y pipe from the exhaust manifolds and drive it you should figure out quickly if that is your problem.
You guys were right, The p.c.m. was probably working fine, I pulled it out of the dealer and discovered the distributer was fried.....spent a few afternoons in my driveway and replaced the dist, wires and sparkplugs and its running like a scalded dog again.......thanks for the advice and I'll check in here first in the future.
