GEAR DRIVE
Are there any (dis)advantages to having a gear drive in my truck rather than a timing chain. I have a 71 F100 with a 390. I heard a motor identical to mine at a truck show and loved the sound. I want to know if it is a good idea or worth my time and money.

GEAR DRIVE
Aftermarket gears are available for almost all domestic V-8 engines. Prices run from $150 to almost $400. They consist of the cam and crank gears, along with one or two idler gears. Pete Jackson is one manufacturer, and usually you can get either quiet or noisy gears. It depends on how much "gear whine" you can tolerate.

Advantages- Dead nuts valve and spark timing without the variations associated with timing chains after they start to stretch a bit.
Disadvantage- They cost about twice as much a good roller chain and standard gears. Also, if this is your daily driver, that gear whine can get old after a while, but hey, its your ride.
