No start 460, I'm stumped

Truck sat for a week, now it won't start. Using jumpers I can hear the fuel pumps cut on. I replaced fuel relay, no help. Fuel cutoff/accident reset switch under dash was not tripped. Starter fluid into throttle body gets nothing either. Cleaned all connections at starter relay and battery, no help there either. It turns over like a champ but does not start. I've now beat this dog for a week and I can admit when I'm stumped...I'm stumped. I figure it is something simple, I just can't put my finger on it. Oh yes, changed fuel filter also. Any help would be appreciated. I have no codes since I have no reader. Thanks in advance!

Nothing with starting fluid in the throttle body tells me no spark. Check the ignition.

Using spark tester, there is spark. Possibly weak but not sure.

How weak? Will the spark jump a 7/16" gap? It doesn't take much spark to get starting fluid to go. Did you check to see if the timing chain slipped?

Here's a long shot but did you try looking at the distrubitor shaft to see if the shaft
shear pin is sheared?

Used one of those glow tube testers....orange spark, NOT what I expected. Truck has 80,000 miles on it, figured I was good on chain. I am no whiz with all the electrical but suspect power to fuel pump not coming on there and possibly someplace else (like Distrib)....EEC relay maybe? When switch is turned to 'on' I used to hear fuel pumps, not anymore. I jumped them at relay to make sure they still worked, they do. Thanks for all your help! I need it!!!! Have a good one!

The engine should have at least fired (not stay running, but fired at least) with the starting fluid. Since it did not, I don't thing you have a fuel problem. If you can't make the engine burn starting fluid, it sure as he!! won't burn gas. It is either ignition or a mechanical problem with the motor. Most likely ignition.

What year truck? And the cap and rotor (if they need cleaning the should be replaced) and coil aren't all the items in the ignition system.

Don't know what year 460 you got so have to make some assumptions...

Did it run well before you let it sit?

How did you get starting fluid into the TB? If you removed the air flow sensor or whatever Ford calls the thingie before the TB, it may not want to fire. I don't think the computer controlled engines will run with the sensor pulled off the "snorkle". Also if you had to remove the sensor to spray the fluid into the TB, I wonder if the fluid evaporates before you replace the sensor. Just an idea.

Sounds like coil or rotor could be a cause of no spark. Also maybe your plug wires are old and marginal. When was the last time you replaced or inspected the inside of the distributor cap? Sometimes they get carbon tracking or dirt which kills the spark. Is there moisture inside the cap? Clean connections to plug wires? Your plugs are OK?

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

He has little or no spark from the coil and the coil has been replaced and he cleaned the cap and rotor. It has to be the box or the sensor (doubtful but possible) if it is anything unless the system is a computor controlled one. The engine should at least fire (not stay running, but fire) with the whole EFI system off if you spray starting fluid in the intake.

Pickup in the dizzy may have crapped out. Not unheard of, and will cause a no-spark condition. My dad has had to replace a couple of his. Luckily it's a cheap, easy part to swap.

Truck is 1990. Pulled snorkel tubes, shot starter fluid in both barrels of efi. Perhaps I am using wrong terms for components? Truck is EFI. Throttle body to me is where the throttle linkage is. Have no clue where this sensor ya'll are talking about is. I simply pulled the air intake tubes/hoses (2), sprayed starter fluid and cranked. The first time it sputtered then would do no more. Would the EEC relay cause this? Thanks again! Oops, forgot, prior to sitting for a week the truck ran like a scalded dog! No problems, fired right up everytime. Of course, I haven't had it that long nor been that many places with it.
