Ok, I just back from the wrecking yard. This has been bothering me. I pulled the intake on a 460 and checked out the cam lobe location vs the lifter bore. The offset is what I would normally expect. The lobe is about 1/4", give or take a little, closer to the front side of bore. But, you can see the entire front and rear edge of the lobe thru the bore.
Before my trip to the wrecking yard, I got a hold of the owner of the one of the suspect motors I first noticed the off center issue on a few years ago. He said the motor blew up on its first run. He never knew why. This was a Bonneville car, about 1999. He reminded me that at the time my concern was that only about half the cam lobe was visible when looking down thru the lifter bore. Thus, the reason I referred back to the motor builder. Needless to say, he doesn't use that engine guy any more.
The original concern from Knut on this thread was the lobe was off center. I would again advise him to check just how far off center.

i highly doubt the offset cam lobes had ne thing to do with the motor grenading.i have seen many guys over torque that cam bolt and .. well when on a run KABOOOM. or unless a rod lets use. u can use very size cam gears to get the disired offset. various thicknesses.call up ford and find out how much of a offset they want. but again ... u do want them to be offset to prevent premature wear.
In response to 429fordpower is you have to use a freeze plug at the back of the cam to hold in the oil. If it is not used then it will leak like a sive. I have seen people drive these to far and hold the cam to far forward. Or it a can rub and wear a hole and leak oil if it is drove in to far.
i thought u said to use the plug as a shim or such. i was simply saying this was a bad idea cuase the cam would wear a hole threw the plug. i was stating that the cam plate was the only real way to get the proper cam depth.
