Thanks Brawlnbronc--after reading your symptoms, I think it may not be the cats afterall. The reason I say this is that even before I started jacking with the timing, our problems were at lower RPM's. Its a manual transmission and when you would let off the clutch to take off, it would really lug. Same with going up a hill. It seemed to run smooth once you got it above 2000-2500 RPM. Getting to that RPM range was where my problems were.
Once I started advancing the timing, the thing took off better and smoother and throttle response is a lot better in the low RPM range. Seems the higher I go with base timing, the better it gets.
My teenage son is driving it now--if it ever stops long enough for the exhaust to cool, I may try to pull the cats and check them out.
