Has anyone installed the led tailights from IPCW? they had them at summit and they looked cool and i was just wondering how the quality was, and if they were bright. i have the led third brake light from Recon and i like that, and i would like to get the led tail lights also. Also has anyone installed the White Lightning led tail light bar from Recon, it works just like the other tail light bar with the blinkers and running lights and brake lights but also now switches to white when in reverse. it looks cool and might help get a lot more light back there.
Thanks,
Marc
I've read on other forums that the diode's don't last. It might have 12 LED'S and 2 or 3 will burn out. I've got a customer that has them in his GM dually and he's got 3 diodes out in his right light but the left is fine. He said he contacted them and they only had a 90 day warranty. He'd had them for like 6 months at that point. I love the way they look, but for $200+, I want them to last. It's just a matter of using quality materials as I had a full array of MAXXIMA LED's in my 2002 Peterbilt dump truck and they had a 100,000 hour warranty on their diode's. In 5 years, I never replaced a light.
Another option you might consider is modding the stock lights to accept a Truck-Lite or Maxxima LED 6" Oval stop/tail/turn lamp. I've done this as have a few other folks. They retain your stock housings, so they look stock, accept that you get these bright, instant on lamps in there. You can see them in my pics below. Pretty cheap option, too... I got my lights off Ebay for about $35 for the pair, shipped.
Unfortunately I didn't have a digital camera at the time I did the mod. There are other webshots albums I've seen with pics of the job, but don't know the links.
It's really easy though once you understand what to do. The lights I used are Truck-Lite Model 60 LED lamps. You can find them on Ebay for a great price, probably. They're about 6" tall, 2.5" wide or so, and shaped like a bar custard-filled donut. I used a dremel tool with a cutting wheel to cut the back of the stock housing (which is the reflector part). You just cut out enough for the lamp to be able to lay there. Then you use some gel epoxy to hold it in place.
Oh, just remembered where some pics are. Here's a webshots album belonging to DualStroked, a member from the Diesel Stop. His truck has even more lights than mine. http://community.webshots.com/album/126008152ENaZqd
If you look at the last two pictures, you'll see where he took the taillight housings out and cut part of the reflector out to accomodate the lamp. You'll want get any shavings out of the lens before you install the lamp, otherwise you'll have little black pieces of plastic in your lens forever. Also, you'll have to cut and solder the wires as the stock plug and the plug on the new LED lamp won't match up... no biggie, though.
Lastly, as you'd have to do with any LED taillights, you'll need to swap the flasher relay out for a Trico EP-27 flasher, or the lights will blink super fast when you put on the blinker. You can get the new relay for about $13 at Autozone or the like.
And if anyone has any questions or any of that was unclear, let me know. It's a pretty cool mod once it's done.... the taillights are very crisp, come on and off "instantly" and are real bright.
You might try the White Knight backup/trailer light kit. Under $100 and fits to your trailer hitch & wires directly into the harness. Two great light's and a manual switch installed on the back for 3 way switching. Many web sites sell them. I like the Pacer LED bar w/o the white backup option, only $50, as it really doesn't do what the other real backup lights will do.
