I prefer to have a radio on, not so loud you can't talk reasonably, just enough to have some kind of background. If I don't have a radio, my mind tends to wander, but with a radio, I can stay focused, keeps my mind somewhat distracted in thoughts, and I can focus better... may be wierd, but it does work for me. I don't actually pay attention to it that well, but it helps me to have it.

I couldn't find the right poll answer either.

But with a minimum 2, maximum 4 guys working in the shop at any given time, for me, it's always on the classic rock station. I'll tolerate the new "pop country", but I can only listen to hip hop a few minutes at a time. For the most part, I set the radio to classic rock on Wednesday mornings (my Monday) and it stays there till Saturday, when I'll let the younger guys listen to hip hop. Someone else changes it to country on Monday mornings.

One of my tractors has a radio, but it's, well... vintage, shall we say? So it only picks up AM stations. I listen to the local Top 40 station sometimes, and try to catch the news at noon on it. My truck has an AM/FM, and I listen to either classic rock or current country in it. At my town job, the radio is usually on, but in the warehouse I work in, you practically have to be on top of it to hear it.

we had something simmiliar at the Ace I used to work at, it was some sort of crappy sat. system, when no one was looking, we'd dissconnect it and hook a cd player to it, one time the manager asked my why the beastie boys were on the "radio" I claimed the sat. company got new , younger staff...

Way way to loud for a radio where I work. That and it says right in the manual that they are banned. Not sure why they banned them, you couldn't hear most of them if you were more than two feet away any way.

Just curious:

For those not allowed to listen at work, is this for the sake of others or a job productivity issue? Seems a walkman would fit the bill if the radio annoys others.

I work construction and a quiet jobsite is as annoying to me as one with music must be to others. BUT...jobsites where three or four different radio stations are all battling for your attention is perhaps the worst of all.

Once had a boss forbid music because it "enables your mind to drift off the work at hand." Maybe for some people, but speaking for myself, I'm happier & can get more work done WITH music. I think smart bosses recognize this but the old school ones would say: You're not SUPPOSED to be happy when you're working!

i can just say for the place i was at while in the military, we had several security post, 12 hour shifts on them, they got little clock radios for the posts that had power because people start using their imagination alot when there is nothing to do for 12 hours a day. so they got the radios to relieve the boredom factor and so no one goes crazy. after we got the radios, everyone started to pay more attention to what their suppose to be doing, and that is security!

We aren't supposed to be playing music at work (retail) due to ASCAP crap but I do anyway and I let the employees. However, I have come in occasionally and heard the radio tuned to stations that I won't tolerate at work because they scare people away. The last thing someone needs to hear when they walk into our store is "skeet skeet skeet skeet!". So if the song or station is too obnoxious or too loud I'll tell them to change it or turn it down but otherwise I always have a radio on.

What genre of music does the "skeet skeet skeet skeet" you refer to come from? I definitly do want to avoid that....

XM 26 at the Chevy Store, Classic Rock or Country at the Ford Store. Techs in both shops have radios and can pretty much play what they want, within reason- ditto offices, detail, etc. Usual caveats apply- not too obnoxious, not too loud.
