I just swapped a 351M into my 78 F250 4x4 4 speed manual. I used a bell housing, clutch and flywheel off a 1981 F350 but didn't get the starter that goes with it. I have tried different starters 78 to 84 but cannot seem to get one to fit right. When I bolt them into place I can't turn the motor (using a socket on the crankbolt). What have I done wrong here, should I try shimming the starter out further from the bell?
Thanks in advance,
Greg
It had a 300-6, I am putting in a 76 351m. I have the starter shimmed about 1/8" and it is free to turn the engine. I am charging the battery now and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply Kem...
Opps .Just thought I had it figured out. Starter and solenoid both work fine BUT it is still not turning the motor, just clicks. I think I had better pull the motor back out and check my clutch and flywheel installation ( I still have the front off the truck so its not as big a deal)
yea if you cant turn the motor over with a breaker bar up front then something is for sure binding up. I used flywheel bolts that were to long and they kept the motor from moving.
did the motor move freely before you bolted up to the tranny?
Can you turn the motor over by hand when the starter is not in or in the bellhousing? Is the trans in neutral when you are trying to turn the motor by hand? If the starter is specific for a M motor, then you should not have any problems. It is a process of elimination, take your time and trace backward.
I got it working. I put some grease on the nose cone and found that the flywheel was rubbing against the snout just above the gear opening. I tried an automatic transmission starter and it works great. Thanks for the time you guys spent on this problem, its is greatly appreciated
