need some brackets for the alternator and power steering pump, 78f250 4x4 manual switched out 400 to 460, had to fabricate almost everything. Is there anything out ther tat will work for mounting the alternator and powersteering pump and if not where can I buy it???
how much could U possibly have to "Fabricate", same bellhousing, so U can use the old one, and tranny and EVERYTHING, so that's set, if ur that old it's simple...might have to drill another hole if U got the 2 hole mounts, as oposed to the 1 hole.....but that's nothing......just get brackets for a 460.....like find a junkyard w/ one in it, and take all the brackets for the accesories.......I dunno.....I've made all my own **** like that from scratch, but I've also made motor mounts from scratch, and about EVERYTHING else to do trickier swaps........but it should be easy!.....I mean that truck had the 460 option back in the day, so that helps alot too!....wish I had that luxury!
I used the alternator bracket off a late 70s van along with some spacers to get the pulleys to line lup. As far as the power steering, I went with L&L. Bronco Graveyard carriers thier stuff. A little spendy but worth it in my opinion. Trying to source some things outta junkyards around here was a big pain.

As a matter of factly, no ford 4x4 truck ever came with a 302, 390, or 460 from the factory until 1983, no 390 was ever put in a 4x4.
L&L makes the power steering bracket, but the alternator brackets should be the same, you might need a different length top spacer but that should be pretty easy.
Jeffs Bronco Graveyard might have the bracketry you need as well.

they def. DID put 460 in 4X4 trucks and they may not have used 390 in 4X4, but I know they used 360's, which is exactly the same motor cept for the crank and rods.....they even had the same pistons....as the car 390, but same thing right!..lol
and I really don't know about smallblocks cuz they are useless in any type of a fullsize truck as far as I'm concerned.
maybe U should know what ur talking about first son
i just used the brackets off the 460 for the alt and ps if you dont have them search the junk yards you will find them very common motor option in f and e 350s 2wd not that rare.i had to modify my ps bracket a little but not that serious.i hope this helps
Well, I've been around a lot of Ford trucks, built a few motors, and I know for a fact there is no factory 4x4 460 powered truck before 1983, no way no how. Also, before you go off misleading some people, the flexplate is different, they have a different imbalance, and it has a different bolt pattern. The brackets for the E series vans usually work without a hitch.
Also, try to type in a readable format, you make it look like you are twelve years old. This isn't a chat room.
Diddo on what matt says about the no 460 in a 4wd truck before 83, you may say you've seen one with all factory parts but if you found a 2wd truck with the same tranny it takes on bout a day to convert a 400 4wd to a 460 4wd. To date i have never seen a factory 460 4wd truck (or heard of) before 83.
well I had a 78' F-250 w/ a 460......I pulled the motor out and sold it, cuz I only bought it for the front, and rear end.....so I stripped it all down, and everything looked original like matching year numbers on everything, and nothing looked like it had been cut, drilled, or welded or nething, I've done alot of swaps putting differnt motors in different vehicles, but this REALLY appeared to be all factory.....it did have a plow and that package though, maybe that had something to do w/ it?.....I dunno......The flexplate for a 460 is a given. anytime I swap motors I use as much as I can for the new motor tho.....
Ford doesn't number things like GM, most all 460 blocks have the car casting (D3VE-xxx; D3AE-xxx), even if they went in F100 2wd trucks. If you had your vin code handy, I imagine the fourth character would be an H or S, H is 351M, S is 400. B is a 300, but then the original owner would have to have changed the tranny/bellhousing to be compatible. The Snowfighter package was a heavier front spring and Dana 60 front axle option.
Matt is 100% right on the no 460s in 4x4s (I didn't realize no 390s so thats interesting to me) they also never put it in F150s at all. But it was so easy to make it appear factory as to not even be funny, becuase the swap can litterly be done with factory parts, if your really good at researching stuff, motor mounts is the hardest part and even that can be slightly modified to use a factory mount. I did that swap on a 79 F150 using a 460 out of a 79 E350 van, I sold that truck and the guy I sold it to took it to some races and entered it in stock class, they put it through tech inspection and those guys didn't even catch that it wasn't the factory original engine.
You have been very lucky then, when I read your post I went and did a little searching the years I was able to find were for 78 and 79 only (basically the info I could find said that was the only 2 yrs it was ever done) and less then 1/10th of 1% in other words only a couple hundred were ever made that way.
well the vin he lists does say F150 4x2 460 only thing it doesn't give is the year. Like I said from the production figures I was able to dig up it said 78 and 79, although I did find one site that said the 77 model year was when they replaced the FE, but absolutly no mention of the 460 even bieng a choice, and from the production figures there should be less than a thousand total built (like earlier posting, less than 1/10 of 1%) which would make it more rare than a Boss 429 mustang.
