Got a call a couple of years ago from a regular customer, asked how to fix 2 holes in the TOP of his fuel tank. He had a leak in his trunk and drilled 2 half inch holes in the trunk to get the water out..............drilled right into the top of the tank! When he showed up I pulled the rubber drain plugs out of the floor of his trunk, then pulled the fuel tank and welded the holes up. The look on his face when I pulled those plugs....
Not a vehicle I ever owned, but a few years ago, my friend was shopping for a Model A to restore. We were driving somewhere, and happened to see one by the side of the road, an AA truck.
The roof on closed-cab Model A's, for those who don't know, is made of fabric stretched over wood bows, somewhat like a convertible top except that it doesn't move. Well, apparently the top of this truck had been damaged beyond repair, so the guy built a new roof out of 2x6s and then covered it with asphalt roof shingles. There was a certain simple elegance to it, but we didn't think the shingles would stay on too well even at the speeds a Model A can attain on good roads.
