the DUMMY AWARDS

Ever got a used car or truck, and found something on it done by a previous owner that was so ignorant it deserved special recognition?

Well, here's a thread just for venting contempt and disgust at half-way fixes, and automotive shortcuts perpetrated by the mechanically incompetent!

Post a pic if you have one...

This one is why the U-Joints were shot in the Ranger I recently picked up:

C'mon, Greywolf, I'm disappointed your award name wasn't more creative--something like, "The Hilljack Awards".

I got you beat there Greywolf. The previous owner of 88 Bronco I had... are you ready for this. HE WELDED THE OIL PLUG TO THE PAN. Complete weld/braise around it. I had to pull the pan and replace it and the oil pump.

Wonder what that was all about. Maybe he had a small leak that he just couldnt get rid of

Just an idiot who drilled a hole into one of the plenums on an intake manifold I bought. I didn't notice it.

Installed it, cranked it over and over and over until the engine backfired out of the crankcase. Shot the oil fill cap about 20 feet into the air.

Another PO drilled 3 holes in the dash for gages in my 55 F100.

That s we thought also... but he either welded it with the oil in it. or without. If it was empty and had the plug out couldn't he have just replaced the darn plug.errrggh

You don't suppose he stripped the threads in a self-tapping replacement, do ya???

That would be good for a DOUBLE award!

That gets my vote...he probably stripped the threads and didn't know about self-tapping replacements so he just welded the sucker in. He'd have had to do it empty, if there's oil in the pan when you try to weld it, it absorbs the heat too quickly and doesn't get hot enough to weld. (Don't ask me how I know... )

PO sliced dust boot on Crown Vic lower ball joint to be able to squirt oil in to lube it. Ford SW I bought at an auction had a bad latch on glove box, someone drilled 2 holes in the cover and used a zip tie to keep the glove box closed.

I should have shot pictures of the solid block of plastic stuff I found in the radiator of the same truck. It cost me one whole entire cylinder head, a water pump, and a new thermo - and now there is a leak underneath the intake that I am about one hundred percent sure is nothing but a bad hose the PO was too chicken, lazy, or unskilled to go in there after.

Figure the odds that it's the original leak the PO tried to fix with twenty cans of bars leak...
