JIffy Lube

Does anyone use Jiffy Lube for oil changes on their Expy? I brought my civic to the a new Jiffy Lube that opened up along my route to work and I asked them if they have 5w-20 multi-blend that they use for the Expy and they said yes. Now I'm considering using them to change my oil instead of myself. Any opinions good or bad.

They definitely will have 5W20 oil, since Ford and Honda both use that in cars and trucks. But I doubt it will be a full synthetic or synth blend like Mobil 1 or Motorcraft. It is most likely conventional oil which isn't quite as durable as a synthetic blend.

I really do not like Jiffy Lube. Have heard of several bad experiences, and the last time (and I mean LAST TIME!) I went there they left the PCV valve unseated causing an engine light.

If you don't plan on changing the oil yourself again....you might use them. I used to go to quick lube places but they all seem to want to over tighten the drain plug and filter. I have even had them strip a drain plug once....that was fun to get off. Also I am not sure what all years have the silly oil chute for the oil filter run off but I highly doubt they will clean it very well and you will get oil on your driveway or garage floor.

Maybe I am **** but I just don't trust them....

Trust but Verify

Given the scandal in the Los Angeles area with Jiffy lubes found charging for filters they that they did not even replace, I like to lurk right near the vehicle so that I see the old filter coming off. I find that some jiffy lubes (and other Jiffy type operations) are better than others and that some are more reluctant to let me close enough to observe the process. I choose my locations accordingly. My observation is that they are generally carefull in tightening both the filters and the fill plug. Given the overall attitude on the forums that the motorcraft are superior to most other filters, I usually ask them to use a motorcraft filter that I supply...they usually credit me a couple of bucks for supplying own filter. If the weather is nice I like to change it myself, but if it's cold or wet I will take it in. Frankly, I cannot say the dealer techs are any better, and I never even get into their shop to watch. And in my area, the dealer actually charges less for the job!

I have never had a good experience with a Jiffy Lube--too many youngsters that don't seem to know what to do. If you want to have someone change the oil/filter, look for a smaller chain, or 'one only' shop--try them, if you like it, go back.

I think the 4x4 Trucks are probably the easiest vehicles to change oil on. Anything else and you just use the gorilla ramps.

Read this link.

http://www.jiffylubeproblems.com/

This is definitely not to say that it happens at EVERY jiffy lube. I tend to think so, but who am I to judge? Read the stories for yourself. I'm sure some are lies, but I'm sure there are some truths to those stories.

But NBC4 caught them just last month at a Jiffy Lube in Encino. Before taking a test car there, NBC4 marked the oil filter with a happy face. A technician there told an undercover NBC4 producer they were going to change the fuel filter and oil filter. But NBC4 cameras capture a technician bringing over a new oil filter, Setting it down on the car, and then take it away without putting it in. After NBC4's visit, the old filter with the happy face was still there.

"The problem comes from the top," says a former jiffy Lube employee. NBC4's insider says management, like the district manager Steven Ayoub, push employees to meet internal quotas to sell at least $66 of services per car. These targets are known as budgets.

"If you don't meet the budgets, you're not going to get your bonus. Your job is on the line," the insider tells NBC4. He also tells NBC4 the only way they can meet their quotas is to sell as many services as possible. "They don't have the time to perform each and every single service they sell," The insider says.

By the way, just insert Zippy Lube, QuickLube, Stop&Lube, Midas, Meineke- whatever, and you have places that are there to just rip you off. This includes dealerships. Like I've said 1,000 times before, check around, and ask more than just your buddy. They may treat hime very good, and you very bad!

In the past several years I have tried places like the dealer, jiffy etc... Every single time they do something to tick me off. They've never cleaned up the spilt oil from underneath, most of them overtigten the drain plug. I've caught a few of them trying to keep the old filter on. Had a dealer leave the coolant cap off from the supposed 15pt inspection. Luckily I checked their work at the house which was only a mile away. I had a recommended place change the transmission fluid in the expy and they overfilled the crap out of it. The really experienced mechanic/owner had a punk teenager change it since it was an easy job to do. I instantly had noticed leaving the shop that it shifted different. I made them redo the whole thing and told him to keep his little helper away from it. Most of them have the nerve to leave greasy handprints near the hood of the car and also on the steering wheel. I have no problem saying that 99% of oil change places and dealers are nasty P.O.S. when it comes to maintenance on your vehicle. As you can tell I do all maintenance on the vehicles unless I don't have the equipment. I also record the oil changes or other maintenance in the service manual.

Better than my Dealer

I have to say that I have used a Jiffy Lube in Arlington VIrginia and have had very good experiences with them. In fact, better than the the experiences I have had with my local Ford dealer. BUt perhaps I have just encountered an unusually good Jiffy Lube.

That might be plausible as a generality, but I'm assuming you've never tried to remove the oil filter on a 2004 Expedition. Located above the frame cross-member and behind the fan, you need hands like a girl or an extra elbow joint to do it. I've heard other years had a remote mounted oil filter - I only wish that's what the 2004 had. I haven't tried to see if a remote mount is availabe aftermarket.

The remote oil filter mount is awesome! You can change the oil without ever getting a drop on your hands, if you're careful. And it takes a max of 20 minutes from prep to cleanup. I don't trust the quick lube joints either. If they ever screw up, and they do often, they can be very difficult to get any satisfaction from.
