91 Ranger 4.0 vs. 04 Colorado 3.5 5 cyl.
I am a little new to this website, so I firgure I would start with the ole ford vs. chevy battle. Just to see what you all think, my buddy has a 04 colorado rated at 220 hp and lesser torque, with a five-speed. Then I have a 1991 Ford Ranger 4.0 @ 160 and 220 foot pounds with about 124,000 miles. he wants to race, think I have a chance? Keep in mind my little ranger in no slouch, 10.20s in the 1/8 mile. Not bad for a stock truck with 100 grand and slick tires. just would like your opinion before i race him. (and I am talking racing against him in the 1/8 not maxed out to the limit)

You'll be hard pressed to do anything after maybe an initial jump ahead...
The Colorado matches your truck in torque (or pretty close to it) and being an inline engine, will naturally kick that in sooner.
Plus, those really nice flowing 4 valve heads and dual overhead cams don't hurt breathing, either...nothing that an engine from the early 90s can just flat out blow away if most everything else balances out.

I guess I should elaborate a little bit. I was going to the high school one night and got stuck next to a crew cab Colorado with the 5 cylinder at a light.
Light turns green, I walk off and leave him out of it (he's auto I'm stick). No problem getting ahead or staying ahead.
Return trip run into the same guy at the same light (how's that for coincidence?). he asks for a rematch, I'm still talking to him when the light turns green. He beats me out of the light and got a good lead on me.
The 4.0L has more acceleration, once I got going I started catching him, but off the line there's no match. The Colorado will win. In a 1/8 mile race, it's all about driver skill. First launch will win, I guarantee it.

yea, if it were something like a course and not a striaght you would beat him because you could be faster in the turns, but on the 1/8 unless you bat him off the line, you lose. you'ld have a better chance with a stick i think. i dont really know, only did a 1/8 once. and i dont race on the street. too much of a hassle with all the staties up round here

So...how'd it go?
Here's an amusing story for you guys. I went to leave this morning and one of my neighbors was outside adjusting his El Camino's idle. I started my truck and then he got in his car and drove off. I did about a minute later.
I get down to a stop sign and see what I thought was his El Camino coming down the road, so I pull out and off I go. We get to a light at the highway and the light turns green, get out on the highway and he comes around into the other lane and goes to pass me.
So I'm like "haha Joey's El Camino, been here done this" and shift back into third and off I go. Suddenly it gets real loud and this old Mustang blows past me...apparently it wasn't his El Camino.

I haven't read one test where anybody was impressed the the chevy inline 5, it's a chevy, and it's a dog, TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, the thing that will hurt you most, is the gears, and the automatic. He can wind every gear out, and stay in his power band, you can't, and those gears will even make it worse. Get a set of 4:30 gears, tighten up your shifts, traction bars, and then you gotta race. "O YEAH", AND A GOOD SET OF REAR TIRES.
