Hello all. I'm trying to convert my 1955 223 CI I-6 engine to an electronic ignition. I can't seem to find any aftermarket distributors that will fit my engine (it's been converted to 12V). Has anyone else had any luck finding something that works? Thanks in advance.
I have heard some very good things about the Pertronics modules for stock distributors. I did a quick search and came up with the link below. Good Luck.
Pertronix Ignitions are great. I have installed them in several vehicles. You get a much stronger, hotter spark. NO points / condensors to drift or go bad. Power in noticably improved and the engine runs smoother. Head and oil temperatures in my air-cooled VW's dropped 15-20 degrees. I highly recommend them!
I used a Pertronix unit in my 55 239 V-8 and it ran great. There's no reason why it wouldn't work well....
The earlier units (Version I) has some issues...fixed in Pertronix II.
Regards,
Rick

People say it's possible to install a later Ford 6 distributor. I found a few references to this in some other forums. The gear has to be swapped somehow, and the shaft that spins the oil pump has to be modified unless you switch to a 262 type oil pump (which uses the same size shaft as the newfangled distributor.
The same is true of the earlier vs later 239 OHV Y-block V8. the early ones had a 13 tooth gear on the dist and a blade type drive shaft for the oil pump. Later Y-blocks have a camshaft gear that requires a 14 tooth dist gear and the oil pump drive shaft is hexoganal. So if the newer dist is desired one must replace the oil pump too. It may be possible that there is some parts commonality between the 223/262 and the 239/256/272/292 etc.
