I have been monitoring the filter minder to determine when my air filter needs changing. I have been told that this is not a good idea as they are not reliable. Is this true? And I see beachbumcook has stated that the filters last 50K. I'm sure this will vary due to road conditions, ie. dusty and salty highways during snow melt conditions etc.
I believe that I read in the owners manual that came with the truck that the filter minder was the Ford recommended way to determine filter changes???
Any opinions?
Filter minder does work, and yes that is Ford's recommended way to determine when to change the filter (Check filter minder at least every 15K), and i have had them last over 50k.
International also recommends the use of the filter minder. In addition over the road semi's and off road heavy equipment use a filter minder to determine when to change the air filter.
LOL-- I guess this is the ONLY thing we disagree about on the stock filter. I change mine much more often. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th in almost 74K miles. After living in Tesux for 2 years and knocking about a pound of sand out of the second one I just change it when it looks bad. My motor likes that clean air and I already make enough smoke as it is. I cut one apart not long ago and was amazed how ingeniously simple the construction was and how much dirt it had trapped and still breathed well enough to dyno 444hp with.
I guess we can't agree on everything -lol-, i change when the filter minder gets down to halfway. If i remember correctly it is designed to hold 1600 grams of dirt. All the off road equipment and over the road equipment we have had always had a filter minder and always use that to deteminde when filter needs changing.
I have never seen a change in smoke of fuel economy by using the filter minder.
My truck came stock from ford with a air filter with the white material...not blue.
I would ask for them to pull a filter from stock and compare it to what is in your truck becuase unless something has recently changed... blue is stock.
