Im looking at putting a later model ('95 or later) 8.8 Explorer rear-end with disk brakes in my '60 model F100. Im wondering if anyone has done this and how did it come out. I dont have the new rear-end yet to measure so I dont know if its the same length as my 9". Just looking for info and if anyone has had any problems or input. Thanks.
the problem i had on my 56 was caliper to leaf clearance, but i had the nolimit leaf kit and had to shorten the hangers 1 inch on each side. other than that i havent seen any problems yet also currie has the proper spring hats, ubolts and ebrake cable(lokar). mine has yet to be totally finished but its in just need to plumb, run cables, weld spring hats and shock mounts
Be aware that Explorer's have an axle tube diameter of 3.25", instead of the more common 3". You'll have to do some fiddling with U-bolts and spring plates, but no big deal.
RMF -- I remember your excellent article on this subject, but following the link to it now I see something I didn't realize, that '51-'52 F-1's used a Dana 44. Previously I have seen all 48-52 F-1's listed as having the 41. Does this mean that modern Dana 44 parts can be used in a 51-52 rear axles? (i.e., can I buy a new ring and pinion for mine?) or are there other differences that prohibit doing that?
Sorry, can't answer your question. I know jack ____ about the early rear ends. I'm sure someone in here will come along with the answer though....Nathan?, Vern?.......

Sorry, it's too new for me. I'm old school...make that "geezer" school! Oops, I thought we were talking about Explorer rear ends. But, I still don't know the answer...

The 51-52 did in fact use a Dana 44. As far as I know newer ring and pinion gears will fit. For gears higher than 3.92 you need to change the carrier. You can either get a 19 spline locker or put your spider gears in the new open case.
