I called up dp and talked to a very nice lady (Diane). Who answered all my questions. Now for the big decision. What do i buy? I was originally going to go with a 40hp pcm flash as i dont have guages but want a little more spunk out of her.
But now im thinking of a flip chip with stock, 40hp, 80hp tow, and lope. I love the sound of a loping big rig at the tractor pulls. I dont tow anything and dont have any furure plans on towing and the truck has 155,000 miles on it so i dont want to go any bigger than 80hp setting on the engine. Longetivity is my goal.
If i go with a flip chip and install guages am i on the right track as far as hp selections?
Not sure you can go with an 80HP Tow tune. I cannot and I have 4 in MBRP wu AIS Intake. Jody thought I might heat up too quickly. It does heat up quickly too.
Ask Jody what you should get and he will tell you the truth. IMO you should just get 1 tune and stick with it unless you have a reason for many tines.
lope? is that just a tune that screws up the ICP signal and makes the engine lope? i know what you mean by that, i went to a pull last night and got some cool pics.
oh anyway to the topic, i would defanitely go with a stock program on there. it makes you justify the chip every now and then. i like to run on stock for a few minutes and then switch to a performance tune, it really makes you wonder how someone could drive a stock tuned truck. i would go with 60hp tow if you dont really tow anything over 10,000 pounds. since you dont tow, you may want to just get 60 econo. then 80 econo, and 100 and 120 tunes if you want. youre getting a chip, so do it right and go all out. even with a 60hp program you need gauges. if you are worried about messing up an engine at 155,000 which seems like mild paranoia to me, then gauges should be at the top of your list. you dont want to heat up that engine too much, and the only way to know when to stop would be the gauge telling you. of course you can have a 120 tune there but not use it much. you are getting the **** with the chip anyway, so why not have it there. you will most likely end up sending it back to get it on there if you dont get it off the bat. i dont use the 140 for anything other than smokeouts. it only netted me 8 more hp on the dyno than the 100 program (TS).
I think PSNut runs a straight 60hp pcm flash, I am now running a 40hp tow pcm flash, and I know there's one other specific FTEer that I can't remember right now that is running a 40hp pcm flash. I tell you what, $75 bones is a cheap test. I like mine (2 days). Well worth the money. It's really easy to install. Disconnect batts, remove 3 bolts, unplug, plug in new one. With the pcm flash, Jody sends it in the silver metal pcm box. So no taking apart, cleaning the contacts, blah blah. That was a good suprise. It may be worth trying the flash just for piece of mind. Kinda give you an idea of how ___hp feels to make a baseline so to speak.
There ya go. I don't know why I thought Nut had a 60hp flash. My 40 on flat ground, empty truck, from a rolling start, WOT will not pass 1100 degrees. It will how ever over boost on with a slight incline (on ramp). I like it. Truck runs great.
It was nlemerise that I first read about having the pcm flash. He did the cross country trip to get the Nova right? I can pretty much say it was because of his experience that I went with the 40hp tow.
...I have had the 40hp tow pcm in my mule for the last six months or so and I am just getting ready to try a 60 or 80 hp pcm flash unit. Jody is going to let me try one out of my choice and if I like it, send him $75 and my old one...if not, just return the newer PCM and we are square...can't beat that with a stick !
That is a deal right there. When I ordered mine Jody asked if I wanted to pay now or just wait till I got it. Dang nice guy who believes in the quality of his product.
we'll going to sit on it till the begining of next week and then talk to jody. My real problem is that i've never driven a chipped truck or anyother powerstroke exceprt mine. So im completely in the dark about what i am about to experience with a flash or chip. You know what really got me thinking about this?= bullydogs free 3 day trial PCM flash. And as i was thinking about getting that put in i was like why would i let some small auto-parts store just dump some info into my pcm. So, before i made the mistake with that bullydog free stuff i was like why not call down to dp tuning and talk to the experts. The first words out of my mouth were "you guys are talked of highly on FTE" So, I will post back with what i picked next week. But if anyone has anymore input its more than welcome.
You WILL NOT, I repeat NOT, be disappointed in Jody's PCM flash...your only problem will be removing the grin from your face everytime you drive your truck! I'd stick with the 40hp if longevity is your goal...Neal
hey strokin_it, i see youre from the mayrland, the pulls that i was refering to was the BUCK. Im sure youve been to diesel days!
i have not been to DieselDays if it's at the buck, but im interested. i was at the last Spring Fling in York Springs right on rt.15. i used to belong to an R/C racing club about a half mine away from the Buck, down the road right beside that big market they have there. oh and i went to the pulls last night in hagerstown MD, i heard that there might have been one at the buck last night? i have been right beside the buck at that truss manufacturing plant to pick up a load of HeatSource1 stoves. i live about an hour and a half away from there taking the back roads.
