Got an 86 Bronco II, 2.9L: the 5 speed manual tranny is stuck in 2nd gear; when in the neutral position it's still in 2nd, and it'll shift into 5th and reverse while staying in 2nd gear. I pulled the tranny and am about to open it up, but I'm not too sure what to look for. Any ideas??
Sounds like the shifter popped out of the socket in the top of the transmission. Probably a bad retainer clip or whatever it is that holds the shifter down into the transmission. You can probably put it where it should be for 2nd, push down and then try shifting the transmission into neutral. You'll have to remove the shifter anyhow to drop the transmission... you can pull the carpet up and away from the shifter -- may want to remove the front seats -- and then pull the boot and shifter out and then see what's what. I had an '86 Ranger that I ended up taking some safety wire and making a retainer out of... worked until the clutch finally gave out Check www.autozone.com/repair_info.htm and enter your info and look around in there. Should be a procedure for all of this. You may also want to go ahead and get a Haynes and/or Chilton's manual and check that out. Hope this helps
