On my 2007 ford f150 5.4 when you put the shifter on the 2nd gear, it locks out my transmission in 2nd gear. In my other vehicles if you put it in 2nd gear it goes from 1st to 2nd and locks it there. It cant be good for the tranny to be starting from a stand still in 2nd gear. Spoke to a general mechanic and he said 99% of vehicles go from 1st then 2nd then locks it there. what is the reason behind this?
I'm not going out in the cold to get my owners manual right now, but I think it's done to get out of mud or snow, as there would be less torque to the rear wheels and they wouldn't spin as easy. Back in the early '50's, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Cadilac all used 4 speed hydramatic transmissions but the Pontiac hydramatic would start out in 2nd when you put the gear selector in low. Just a tidbit of history.
Yeah thats what i have heard. But i dont like putting the starin on the tranny, so i will leave in it in drive and try to feather it if i am in that situation. But thanks for the reply.
