Long story short, my BII is now equipped with a wide-ratio 4-speed. Was coming back from the lake last night w/ the boat in tow and second gear went away. I was only a mile from home, so I limped it back on the remaining four gears.
Second won't engage at all, and there's a prominent whining noise in first now. I drained the oil and pulled the oil pan this morning- there are 6 or so little "pin" type things, roughly 1/4" long and 1/8" in diameter.
Basically, what I'm asking is this: Is there any hope of this being anything besides a tranny replacement? I'm sure the chances are small, but it never hurt anyone to ask, right?
Oh, and anyone in the Raleigh, NC area got a used 145 for sale?
If memory serves me correctly, then it appears your synchro(s) are going. Seems like the 5-speeds in these things have a tendency to have this problem, especially in first and second gears. I know here soon enough, I'm going to have to see if I can buy a rebuild kit or something.... since I don't want to spend the money I spent on my Ranger when the clutch was pretty much done.... $1200 (in '95) for new clutch parts, shifter, seals, bearings, new input shaft (pilot bearing / bushing was toast and ate it up, and that particular tranny comes apart from the rear ONLY), etc. But, I guess I'd prefer to spend the extra $$$ on rebuilding it vice getting used and having another problem... *shrug*
When you said "4 speed" I assume you meant 5 speed correct? A 4spd would be the TK4, a toyo trans, not the mitsu FM145. As far as a used trans, are you capeable of rebuilding? I'd guess you still have enough to rebuild, without having too much invested. Just a suggestion...
Well, it was a five speed prior to Monday evening... bad joke attempt on my part.
I've seen the rebuild kits floating around, but I don't really have the facilities to tear apart the tranny (small apartment)- and the BII is my daily driver at the moment, so I need it back in service ASAP. I can pull off a tranny swap in a long day easy.
That is awesome. Thank you so much. For a tranny w/ t-case, 5k on rebuild, that's an awesome deal. Best price I've been able to find on a used tranny has been in the $300 range, and $600 for a rebuilt unit. Heck, I can buy that, resell the t-case for maybe $50, maybe get some cash for the core, and have hardly anything in a new tranny!
