Backfire thur the intake.....

Here's my issue....
I have a 86 f150 with EFI 5.0 with auto tranny. When I step on the pedel, the engine will stall, backfire and surge. Almost dies. but recovers like nothing happens. Used seafoam to clean intake, "smoked up block". So, I replaced plugs (OEM), fuel filter, cap and rotor. Still no improvment. I need some direction ASAP. No codes. Just passed SMOG (California) barely.
I will be checking this forum all night for ideas.

Backfire through carb means .......Engine Timing is off.

How many miles on this engine ?

Maybe the timing gears/chain are worn out ?

Fuel Injection.... 220,000 plus. Timing is on the money. I think I might have found the problem. I checked the "cat". It looks OEM. Might be clogged. Original.....not good. I finished checking the engine compartment for missing vaccum lines, disconnected lines, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. So, I'm suspecting the "cat" needs to be replaced. Question, the timing gear and chain could be worn???? The timing gear and chain is steel, right? Skipped a gear?

Over time, a timing chain can stretch and cause it to skip a tooth as it whips around. I had that happen on my truck last summer. Any time I went to check the timing, the marks were nowhere to be found. I took the motor out for a rebuild and when I took the front cover off, the chain had about 2" of play in it.

The Cam timing gear is made of fibre for quieter operation.
They crack
They break
These lose teeth
The chain can jump several teeth

I would suggest that it is worn out and the source of your problems at 220,000 miles without being replaced.

When Cats plug they cause the engine to run really crappy (no power) and will make the exhaust pipe glow and could eventually start a fire.

Put you hand over the tailpipe hole to feel the amount of exhaust to confirm.
