Here's my issue....
I have a 86 f150 with EFI 5.0 with auto tranny. When I step on the pedel, the engine will stall, backfire and surge. Almost dies. but recovers like nothing happens. Used seafoam to clean intake, "smoked up block". So, I replaced plugs (OEM), fuel filter, cap and rotor. Still no improvment. I need some direction ASAP. No codes. Just passed SMOG (California) barely.
I will be checking this forum all night for ideas.
Fuel Injection.... 220,000 plus. Timing is on the money. I think I might have found the problem. I checked the "cat". It looks OEM. Might be clogged. Original.....not good. I finished checking the engine compartment for missing vaccum lines, disconnected lines, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. So, I'm suspecting the "cat" needs to be replaced. Question, the timing gear and chain could be worn???? The timing gear and chain is steel, right? Skipped a gear?
if this an efi you can check the codes from the computer if it has any. use the hanes manual and follow the directions it will tell you how to check for trouble codes
Over time, a timing chain can stretch and cause it to skip a tooth as it whips around. I had that happen on my truck last summer. Any time I went to check the timing, the marks were nowhere to be found. I took the motor out for a rebuild and when I took the front cover off, the chain had about 2" of play in it.
