Trouble finding front brake hose

I have a 78 f150 4wd and I am having trouble finding a brake hose.I need to know what the hose is called and were to get one.The hose goes from the pressure differential valve to the front axle where it splits off to the left and right wheels. One parts store told me it might be called a central brake hose?

It is critical I replace this.I plan on pulling a camper and have replaced both calipers, rotors, pads, and all rubber hoses except that one.and I dont want it to blow from the extra stress from the new hoses.

Thanks,
Tim

I also have a 1978 F150 4x4 and recently purchased a braided hose from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and it was the hose from the pd valve to the axle. They called it the front axle hose and it worked great for me. I bought the extended one because I have a lift on my truck. If you want to take a look they are on the internet at www.broncograveyard.com.

NO HOSE from the PPV.

There is supposed to be steel brake line coming off the Brake PPV that then runs to the front .....then seperates at a Junction block.
From there is it still STEEL line to the frame (wheelwell) on each side....then it is a RUBBER flexhose to the caliper.

There are RH & LH hoses at the wheels/calipers.

Just like what is shown here on rockauto.

Are you sure its suppost to be steel line? The front axle has to move up and down and a steel line would just crimp up.This is on a 4wd maybe a 2wd is different. We are talking about the same hose right?Im talking about the hose that supplys fluid to the left and right brakes.

Rubber Brake hose can heat & fail . That's why they run steel as far as they can or as close as they can before, Rubber gets installed for flexibility needed at the wheels.

The steel brake line should be mounted to the "Frame" just above the spindle assembly ...not on the axle.

The 4x4 brake line illustration I have does not show a Hose until it goes directly to the caliper.

did you click the link I posted to see the hoses listed ?
They are all listed there

Most hoses are 22" OAL (Over All Length)

But maybe you need this one.

RAYBESTOS Part # BH36837
[FRONT RIGHT HOSE] 4 Wheel Drive; Regular Cab; Hose and Tube Assembly; 45-1/2" OAL {RAYBESTOS}

it is 45 1/2" long (OAL)

There are 3 rubber lines on the front axle of a 4x4. One to get from the frame to the axle, then it's steel line along the axle tubes with a rubber hose at each caliper.

My '79 Bronco has a short piece of steel line, about 8", from the prop valve to the frame, then a rubber hose to drop down to the axle housing.

I looked at some pics of my '75 F100 frame and it looks like the hose connects directly to the prop valve and runs to the axle housing.

www.napaonline.com lists a "center hose" for your application. My local Napa can often show me a picture of the part in a book before they order it. http://www.napaonline.com/masterpage...ront&VehCode=Y

I have had the best luck with Napa for finding parts for my old Fords.

Thats how Chevrolet does theirs. Fords have a center hose that comes down from the frame (like the rear axle), to a tee at the differential housing which is held to the axle by the differential vent and then has steel lines running along the axle housing to the knuckles where they crimp to rubber hoses going to the calipers. The 45 1/2" hose would be the passenger side hose that goes to the RH caliper.

The Raybestos part # for the center hose is BH38558.

all the 4X4 units i have ever had or worked on have had the brake lines steel to the frame just above the spindle, then a rubber hose to the caliper or wheel cylinder. i have never seen a center rubber line with the steel run along the axle tubes on a front axle. is it possible this was a home made fabrication??

Every 1/2 ton 73-79 Ford 4x4 with coil spring fronts that I have seen have had this center hose. Maybe it's a 1/2 ton - 3/4 ton difference?

Thanks 460 & RC for the explanation.

That's precisely why I look up and post links to the actual parts listed ..so a person can see for themselves what is available... like I did in Post #3.

I haven't ever seen a rubber brake hose connected to the PPV.

Your welcome.

Is your 3/4 ton 4wd set up with the hose from the frame to the caliper? I don't have my 350 to go look at. It is sitting in a barn at my buddies place.
Might be a 1/2 ton thing. The 150's, early Broncos and 78-79 Broncos are set up with the center hose. I've never paid much attention to the 250's I've worked on. But I've replaced those hoses on just about every F150 4wd I've ever had (and a lot of Broncos).

Thanks for all the help I found the hose at napa.$35.00 for a hose shorter than the $15.00 caliper hose. What a rip off.But at least I will feel alot safer having all new hoses pulling a 4000lb rv.

Thanks,
Tim

While out at the shop today I took a couple pics of the single drop front brake hose and the steel lines that run along the axle tubes for if anyone was curious about what they look like.
