I have a 94 Splash with extremely cloudy headlight lenses. I was going to check the yards for replacements, does anyone know the range of years that the headlights interchange?
Sometimes lights that look the same don't fit, just wanted to check before pulling something that didn't fit.
Or, I have heard of people wetsanding and polishing to remove the cloudy layer. Anyone tried this? I thought replacements from the pick and pull yard might be easier but if I can't find any.....
I ordered some euro headlights off eBay and the box that they came in said 93-97 Ranger on it. I have a 99. Now, I'm not saying that the 93-97 and the 98-00 are the same, but it seems to be that way. I would check eBay for some headlights to match your truck. You could get a decent set of aftermarket headlights for $100 or less.
I've also heard of people polishing their headlights. Yes, it works, but it is temporary. You'll end up polishing them again. If I wasn't away at college and I would give you the OEM headlights from my truck. They are very, very good condition. I am in Utah, they are in Arkansas.... Sorry, Good luck with it!
Correct, '93-97 is correct. 98-00 have a different light layout, but the same design, they will replace but the light order will be incorrect, you'll have to make sure you install the bulbs the correct way.
I got a full set of aftermarket lights for less than $200 off eBay, headlights, tailights, clear corners. Even if you're not trying to make your truck into a show off vehicle, it's still MUCH clearer when you first turn the lights on.

93-97 have that one amber bulb outside that flanks the headlight while 98-00 have an amber marker light that spreads out under the headlamp as well as the corner lamp...but, I'm groggy as all hell right now, so that's just how I remember it.
But, like RP mentions, get the aftermarket clears. The lens pattern is lousy enough on the factory lamps, not to mention that they yellow when you look at them funny...

thanks
Yes, they can be polished. If you do a search in this forum (maybe GA or appearance) you will find threads that get into polishing in detail (not a new subject but lots of good info is already here). McGuires plastic cleaner followed with their wax is one of the many options to fix the problem, exclusive of replacement with made in china (priced accordingly) ones.
*forget the sandpaper, just go out there with some decent polish/wax combo of a popular brand and you're gonna improve things .
well since i was bout to post a question regarding pretty much the same thing...I was looking at the projector style headlights for the 93-97 ranger that I found on ebay but just curious if neone has them on their ranger...wanted to see how they looked on the truck and how it looked with the lights on far as visibilty and look...can you see better with the projection or the regular...jus trying to see if it will look good and if i can see good at night
I just went out and hit them quick with 3m 1500 paper and water, followed by Meguiars 17 Plastic Cleaner. Made quite a difference. Went from the color of watery milk to a very weak Makers and water. Well worth the 5 minutes, will hold me over till I decide what to do long term.
888, I too have a 94 Splash that I am rebuilding after a drunk hit it. The lights that work are 93-97. I bought some chrome/clear diamond headlights on E-Bay for $71.89 total, that includes shipping. They were cheaper than stock and look alot better.

Is the eBay seller one of those that continually sells the same stuff (meaning he might have another set of lights to auction) or was it a one-time kind of thing? If he has more, can you give me the guy's eBay handle?
I have mixed success on eBay, would like to go where someone has had good results.
Maybe one has been replaced in the past and one is original? Mine were just weathered, I scratched a fingernail down the outside of mine and it was clear underneath so I sanded off the weathered part to improve them. Probably will have to do it again sometime when it weathers again unless I replace them.
888, The E-bay handle is syperformance, and I just checked he does have some and I think he handles them often. He also has the clear corners as a package deal for $26.00 more. Oh yes, they also came with bulbs. I recieved them well packaged and pretty fast.
Plastics yellow as they oxidize, just like paint and metals do. It's oxidized or degraded plastic. Still they CAN be polished out. If the imperfections are large they can be sanded out but don't stop until your in the 1500 grit range.
A compound can be used, by hand (machines can build too much heat quickly and your plastic will melt), but selection is important. Meguiars makes compounds (M84 Compound Power Cleaner and M85 Diamond Cut). The fomer will remove a 1200 or finer sanding mark and the latter will take out 1000 grit marks. The important aspect to the Meguiars compounds is that the abrasives breakdown as you work so that the marks left are very fine and can easily be removed by their M17 Plastic Polish.
Caution: Don't expect Crystal Clear/Water White headlight lenses because although the surface will look like new you won't be able to polish inside as well. Still it's a huge improvement.
