Onboard compressor, Hydraulic?

I was thinking of building an Oasis compressor, but don't really like the idea of the huge amp draw of the electric winch motor powering the compressor. I've got a Milemarker 12,000lb hydraulic winch coming, and it got me thinking about trying to power a York off of a surplus hydralic motor running off the powersteering pump.

Anyone done this yet? I see quite a few canditates on ebay. I was able to look up the specs on a couple and there are at least a couple that have power needed. Several have the shaft size that will fit the Oasis adapter, or I could just run it off a belt and fix the York clutch so it's just a pulley.

Advantages:
1: Can run it as long as needed as long as the engine is running.
2: No extra draw on the electrical system
3: It's cool

Disadvantages:
1: More complicated to hook up
2: Can't run it if the engine is off. (can't run an oasis for long either unless you have extra batteries)

So, what do you think?

Eric

Why not just run the york compresser off of the engine belt?

That would be simpler, but there is no room. 01 F-250 V10. It might be possible to squeeze it in there somewhere after moving stuff, but this would be way easier.

I would run the York and get a new belt. Contact Brad Kilby at www.onboardair.com He makes a ton of york products and bracketry for jeep folks, he might be able to hook you up with something.

I'll give him a call, but I'm just not seeing where to stuff a York under the hood without a bunch of custom parts and moving things. I could see putting it on the drivers side with a custom air intake. That 's where the supercharger kits go, but a York is alot taller than a vortech. I wish I had a PTO.

I do? Where. That would be ideal. Does it hook to the transfer case, or transmission? The tranny is a plain 4r100 I just put in a couple months back. I didn't see any obvious places to hook up a PTO gearbox. I'll scrap the whole hydraulic idea if there is an easy way to add a PTO.

My friend works for a salvage company and he has a few goodies for me. A parker hydraulic pump rated between 4.5 and 12 hp depending on fluid volume and pressure. It would be at the lower end of that range when running off the powersteering pump at idle. He also set aside a nice gear box that it was hooked to . It's a planetary unit and increases speed 6:1. He also got me a couple pulleys and couplers that fit the output of the gearbox. That would give me about 1600-2400 rpm at about 4.5 hp to drive the pump. He also got me 3 tanks from semi's that I can use with whatever setup I can use. I think I can fit the big one on the drivers side and one of the short ones on the passenger rear. I think the long one is probably 6 or 7 gallons.

All that stuff will go on Ebay if the PTO works out. K.I.S.S. if possible.

i'm sorry, i thought you had a 6 speed. the ZF-6's have 2 PTO ports, one on each side. none of the autos i know of have a pto port mainly due to the nature of an auto tranny

I didn't think I did.

I did a little poking around, and ford-parts.com lists the 4r100 as being available with PTO.
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...01&catalogid=1

I wish I knew that before I put the new tranny in, I would have looked into upgrading.

Mine has the 4r100/np273 combo.

I think it's back to the hydraulic setup. I'll post again with a couple pictures when I have something put together.

Hey fishmann, how much you want for your gearbox? I am looking at installing a pto air compressor. I already have the compressor.

In regards to the York and your 2001, isn't the belt system turning the wrong way to run a York anyways?

If you can find the room in your truck (over the rail bed box?) why not a real compressor ?

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w..._290951_290951

run off a cheap $200 hydraulic motor might do (as a 1000 rpm limit, but, with the right pulley you could drive the compressor well over 1,500 rpm for max. psi).

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...1041_200321041

You probably could get everything done, including a used toolbox for under $700 and have real air.

I would mount the compressor and motor on rubber.

If you do quick disconnect fittings at the top of the bed rail and bolt the box down with (2) 1/2" bolts each side, you would have a secure set up plus it would be easy enough to remove if you needed the whole bed.

It would be something you could pop-in for a trail ride.
