Good point. Also, many people don't check the pressure in there spare, so it could be significantly low when they go to put it on. Not to mention worn out. A lot of people don't take care of their trucks like we do, remember that.
Now that you mention it though, I had never thought of the tread thing, my tread on my spare, while it's still in very good condition, is nothing like my new tires.

Well I have the same 5 tires, so switching to the spare wouldn't really be a problem for me...I guess the best thing to do to keep the spare in "shape" is to have a 5 tire rotation. The only thing is that if I ever get new tires I'll never be able trade the spare for anything. I only got $40 for my last spare (stock tire) and it still had the tags on it…guess I would have gotten a lot more money if I kept it and sold it to some family owned tire shop. Now all I need is a new jack!

My ranger came new with a full size wheel, but a temporary use tire. I got rid of the temp tire asap and have a half worn out full size as a spare. I though Ford was just cheasy to give a temporary use tire as a spare. My jack works fine - I've unfortunatly used it many time on the side of the road. 9 flats in the first 60,000 miles ... Hope none of you have that kind of luck ... it just sucks.
