gear shifter

01 f250 PSD, my shift lever will not go into 1st gear (low). IT's physically unable to move that far down. I'm also having intermittant problems with the truck not starting in Park. I either have to jiggle the shifter or put it in nuetral. Any ideas on what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

My guess would be that the shift linkage is out of adjustment. The shift lever is coming into contact with the end of it's free play before the linkage is moving the transmission into low. In Park, the linkage at the transmission is reaching it's free movement in Park before the shift lever is getting far enough up to engage the switch to allow the engine to start.

There should be an adjustment somewhere along the linkage that will let you adjust the throw of the shift lever properly. I would start looking right at the transmission. Perhaps someone with the books can find the right place.

zephcom,

thanks for the help. I'll take a look today. I was hoping it would be something inexpensive/easy to fix.

I don't see any adjustment wheel/nuts. Anyone know how to do this?

do you have a body lift on? If so this is your prob. Now there should be a linkage close to the tranny where your shift rod comes down. Loosen it up and slide the adj. linkage about a inch should be fine. Good luck

Found it!

After months of driving around with a sloppy shifter I finely found the culprit! It(shift linkage) didn't need adjustment as I originally suspected. The two torx nuts holding an "L" bracket in the mechanism under the steering column were loose. One was ready to fall out. Just tightened em up and good to go. Starts in "P" everytime and now I can get into "1".

Thanks all

Thanks,

that was exactly the problem. I tightened them up and it's working great again.
