I have a 72 f-100 with a problem with the cluster guages. The fellow I bought it from was trying to make changes with the guages and now they all are either reading to low or not at all. CAN YOU HELP ME OUT PLEASE.
there are few things worse than cleaning up someones bad wire rigging:-(
If you have the plastic-circuitbehind your instrument cluster as my PU came with, you may do well to get another one . the ammeter as I have heard does not work in "most" FORD pu's I've seen, it just kinda stays about halfway. also, I have had problems with my turn signal Indicators because of this platic circuit board crap becoming dry, and crumbly...and the guy you bought it from may have damaged this board(and thats not hard to do)..... good luck
check out a new one from Dennis Carpenter Reproductions, they got everything you'll need,
This is the simplistic answer, but you are running a 28 year old rig. Unless you are in the process of restoring it, how about going with aftermarket gauges? Much more reliable and you can work around somebody else's "bird's nest".
You can try changing out the instrument cluster voltage regulator. It is the thing behind your fuel and amp gauage. It looks like a 9-volt battery. YOu can pick one up at o'reilly's (they will order it) It runs about 10 bucks. It helped my gauges that were reading low. Check out the circuits on the back while you have the cluster out too.
Regarding Instrument cluster Voltage regulator, my expirience is when that is bad, the gauges read too high, not low. Also Not one of my 3 60's&70's trucks has a functioning Amp gauge, they never move, ever. I saved myself some hassle by catching a Regulator going out by my aftermarket Volt gauge.
My 2 cents
