Front end roar

I have a 00 X PSD 4x4 with 51k on it and when driving 30 mph and up I get a slight roar from the front end. I have the auto locking hubs that do not work but I can turn 4x4 on (without the hubs actually engaging) and the roar goes away. But comes right back when I turn 4x4 off. It is not a loud or a constant sound in that it changes tone a little. Any ideas where I should start looking? I tried swerving a little but the roar sounds the same. Thanks for any help you can give.

Mark

Ended up being my wheeel bearing, knocked out because my caliper slides froze up, left side. Jack it up, grab the tire, see if you have unneccesary movement.

That is funny. I wondered why it only changed sound when I pushed the little pedal on the right.
Thanks for the reply fatswany. I have tried moving the tires without jacking it up (in a pinch) and all seemed tight. I am going to go jack it up now and try.

I had the same thing. One of your front unitized bearings is froze and it's grinding on the axle shaft, that's your roar. When you engage the 4x4 the shaft is spinning with the bearing so there is no roar. I had to replace the bearing, axle shaft, locking hub to a tune of $1500. There were other parts but can't remember them. Get it fixed asap so you don't have to replace the shaft.
