Greetings all, I'm researching the Excursion as this appears to be my next vehicle. Not looking to do much towing at all. If any just motorcyle trailer or 7x14 flat trailer at the most. Will be used as family vehicle as we've outgrown the Expedition. I've seen a 2000 5.4L w/43K & towing package for $12,500. Also a 2002 Limited V10 with 73K for $13,995. I'm in NW IN. I know there are regional differences but with the mileage & years do these appear to be reasonable.
Like I said this will be a family hauler so I don't necessarily need 7.3 or 6.0L engines.
With only $1,500 difference between 'em, I'd opt for the V10. If anything, just for resale value. This assumes both are 2WD or 4WD models (you didn't say).
i just tried to trade in my 2000 v10 for a diesel f250 and the dealer told me he didnt even want it. at all. because it had a v10.
if it was diesel, different story. another used car lot guy said that he would give me wholesale for it then sell it to a ford dealer because he said no one is buying these things with v10's. take a look at the price difference in the two trucks up above. wondering why there is barely a difference in price. i'll bet my horible mileage its because it has a v10 compared to the smaller motor. that is if the vehicles are relitivley spec'ed out the same besides engine.
bottom line- had i known then what i know now, i would have easily spent the extra for the diesel. who was to know that i was going to buy a 30 foot camper and get 6.8 miles to the gallon????
I agree with cficare. I've owned a 2000 V10 4x4 since '01 and I've had no significant issues. I have never regretted buy the vehicle. I think you would be disappointed with the 5.4 and find it underpowered compared to the 6.8L V10.
yea, i agree...V10). I own one and have had no issues(2000) i do not haul anything but my family and i did not want all my neighbors knowing when i come and go with that noisy diesel engine. most justify the v10 with the extra cost of purchase and maintenance with the diesel. towing ? can't answer that one.....also i drive a truck for a living and that diesel noise gets to me sometimes..hard to just hear the radio

Everyone that I have talked to local with the 5.4 has been disappointed in the power, or lack of for that matter. It's good for a pick up but not enough for the weight of the X.
I have a 2000 with the V10, I have towed, hauled a full load of 8 full size adults, and all thier gear. We test drove a 5.4 version and was not happy with the lack of power. My son in-law also worked at a Ford dealer and they saw issues with the 5.4 in the X.
I live in the Pacific NW and have had no issues towing up mountians. Only change has been a K&N filter which had a 1/2 mpg increase over all, also made it a little snappier in town.

This is basically good news to me because I'll soon be searching for a used '05 V10 4WD model to replace my '01 V10 4WD Ltd. I've crunched the numbers for a diesel. The initial cost is higher, but then the resale is, too. However, where I live, diesel is typically more expensive than gasoline. Diesel maintenance costs more, too. Once the numbers were tallied, I'd have to drive a diesel model between 175K and 192K miles BEFORE I'd start seeing any savings from higher MPG rates. And the cost difference will buy a LOT of gas!
FWIW, the Excursions I've seen listed in the local rag don't stay in there long, and I assume it's because they're selling fairly quick around these parts.
02 4x4 v10 since new
big, comfortable, quiet, safe, powerful, roomy, etc...
did not buy it thinking economical gas use.
very happy with it and just regular service after 2 recall issues that the dealer took care of.
Sorry I didn't mention but I didn't know if the 5.4 was 4x4. Found out it isn't so I'll pass on that one. I don't see much sense in owning a truck if it isn't 4x4. Maybe going to look at the '02 tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

You're towing a 30 foot trailer and getting 6.8 mpg with the V-10? What, are you going uphill both ways? I get around 9 overall with my 31 foot trailer. 7.5 with a stiff headwind or in the smaller mountains. I also keep it 65 on the highway.
