I just got my 460 out of the machine shop and also came across a 641/2 mustang, can you shoehorn a BB into a mustang,I know everyone runs 302's and 351w does anyone make a kit?
Like Bear said, not the early ones. At least not easily. It can be done but it requires major mods to the shock towers, which necessitates completely revamping the whole front end (usually a fabricated front subframe and a Mustang II style front suspension system).
Anything can be made to fit any car it just depends on what you want to spend and how much time and money you have. But on a 64-1/2 mustang that is collectable enough I am thinking trying to get it back to original would be good, expecially if the numbers indicate one of the first 500 made.
I had a 70 fastback with a 500 plus HP 460 motor in it. It was fast but I will never go that route again. I will build a 351W stroker motor and get the same HP numbers but have better handling.
As the others have said the 65/66 mustangs are not a bolt in application. The 67 to 70 models will take the 460 and a company called crites sells everything you need to install the 460. 71/73 mustangs came with a 460 from the factory.
I currently own a 65 fastback with a 302 in it and in a year or so I hope to have a 408 installed under the hood.
If your plan was to install a 460 into the 65/66 model then yes it would be cheaper in the long run to build the 351W and IMO I thik the car would have a beteer resale value to it over a 460 set up.
