My 06 diesel has what looks to be a rear main seal leaking. Noticed it at 2000 miles. Wish I had looked before I bought it.
Dealer says rear main leak are very rare, it could be a high pressure fitting.
Maybe things have changed, as it has been years ago that I pulled a tranny.
Don't ever remember any high pressure fitting inside the bell housing.
The drip is at the bottom of bell housing where it bolts to engine.
Besides this, I just love my 06 f250, but maybe I should trade it for an 07.
Is it dripping on your drive or just a hanging drop on the bellhousing? Mine had the hanging drip and I wiped it off and it hasn't returned after 13k miles. I attributed it to assembly lube.
Also, if it's dripping don't assume it's the RMS. It could be, but there are other leaks that could also accumulate on the bellhousing. If you still think it's a leak, ask the service department to put trace dye in the oil so they can trace the leak to its source.
Ford determined that my rear seal was leaking at 1500 miles and changed it. The same leak is back at 3500 miles. I've been wiping it off for about 500 miles now and it comes back within 50 miles. I'm waiting till 5000 miles and a free oil change to give them the bad news.
Had my RMS and read cover replaced at ~1160 miles, drove it home and it was still leaking. Went on vacation and on my return I made an apptment to bring it back in, that was on 6/20. Picked it up on 6/30, drove it home and had a leak in the same spot, Bell housing and off the starter. I wiped it off and have not looked under it yet, I want to drive it a little, before I look again.
I have 6K on it now. Over $40 K for this truck, it should NOT leak.
If it is leaking again they can try to fix it ONE more time, and if it does not fix it, Ford can buy it back.
I really like the truck but I will not put up with it leaking on my driveway.
I'm wondering if I have the same issue. My 05 has 28,000 miles and today when I was changing the oil I noticed an oil leak where the trans and engine are bolted. I have a service appt. scheduled for Monday morning
Mine started leaking at about 3500 miles. I wiped it of and it didn't return till my last trip at 10K miles. Now it won't go away. Just got off the phone and they said it is the rear main which is common and the new seal is redisigned so I "shouldn't" have anymore leak.
They are also replacing a myriad of other parts including some pipe that is cracked and a new turbo.
Funny thing is it had the check engine light come on twice yet they said there are no codes???
My friend has had the same exact thing happen on his. No codes and had two new turbos but he still has a severe lack of power and I can confirm this because I've driven his truck too.
Good news my rear main seal is fine the oil the dealer found was my turbo lines were a little loose. slight leak. they said at first they questioning rear main due to location of leak. glad it was ez fix
