Tire Size Difference

I am looking at getting new tires for my '05 SCAB, replacing the stock set. I have a Daystar Leveling 2.5" kit & Motometal 951 Wheels (17x9). The question I have is what is the difference between the 285/70/r17 & the 33/12.5r17's? I think I am going with Cooper's STT; I have always had good luck with other Cooper products, and cannot beat the price. If someone could explain the difference, I would appreciate it. I know the 285's are metric, I guess a more side-by-side comparison is what I am looking for. Thanks.

The 285/70R17 is 32.7 inches tall, with a tread width of 11.2 inches.
The 33.12.50R17 is 33 inches tall, with a tread width of 12.5 inches.

They're pretty much identical, except for the width. If they're both Cooper STTs (ggod tire, I'm running them now), check the plys. One might be a 6 play and the other an 8 ply.
