Let me guess .....you had to twist the pump to line the holes up ?

Yes there is only one spot where the cam eccentric isn't in the way to allow easy pump install.

I too had fought with that until I realized to keep turning the crank until it slid right in

The pump isn't in yet, so I'm open to detailed suggestions that stem from experience.

Just turn the crank and keep trying to insert the fuel pump until it almost slides in.

Have you seen an illustration of the crankshaft fuel pump eccentric ?

I haven't seen the illustration. Also, what do you use to turn the crank?

The eccentric is about the size of a lid of a mayonnaise jar. There is only one short period where the eccentric allows for easy fuel pump installation as the offset allows for a lengthly "throw"to the lever.
You can turn the crank with a breaker bar and socket and use a long popsicle stick to monitor when the eccentric "Bottoms" ......when it bottoms, stop and then install the pump.

Sometimes you can see in there with a small flashlight and mirror thus avoiding the use of the stick.

My father-in-law and a friend of his put the pump on yesterday. The ended up removing the power steering pump and installing in from the top. They said it ran great for about 5 minutes then died. The battery was worn down enough that they couldn't restart it. I'll replace the fuel filter tomorrow evening and try it again.

The truck has been sitting in sand for a couple of years, so it's blown up around the tires. The friend put the truck in gear after it started and could feel the power begin to spin the tires in that sand. Looks like I'll have to tow it off the soft surface before I can drive it.

I'm also dieing to put some Meguiar's Heavy Cut compound on that oxidized paint. Follow that with their polish and wax and it will be a whole new truck! I can't wait for before/after photos!!!

Thanks for your suggestions. I hope to get that photo soon, too.
