In my '88 F-150 my i have a simple problem, i believe that it wouldnt be to hard of a fix, just a repacement but i am all about cheap, so i will ask anyways. My gas gague is never correct, i dont know if it is the float or just a sensor, but when full until about 1/4 tank it registers full, then about 1/4 tank it goes from empty to full depending on how sharp a turn i am on. if you have any ideas about fixes without replacement please let me know.
Hey i just went through this problem just two weeks ago! It's your fuel sending unit. There is an electronic printed board with a needle that reads how high or low your float is sitting in the tank. When this printed board starts to wear out it loses contact with the reader needle giving it no contact and therfore making your gas gadge stay in one place or jerk around. You can do two things to fix this! 1. Get lucky at your local salvgeyard and find a used one for about 30 bucks ( which I did because i am thrifty when it comes to throwing money at repairs) 2. Get unlucky like I did and spend a whole saturday lifting the bed off and putting in a salvage yard part only to find out shortly that it only worked slighty better . 3. Pry open your squeeky wallet and shell out about 100 bucks for a new part with a warranty! Now being a former Navy guy myself i would think you'd go for #3 right? Anyways make your own conclusions good luck with the fix and thanks for serving in the "Greatest Navy in the World"
I have changed sending units and gas gauges over the years on my 88 and have yet to have a real accurate reading especially on the lower half .It was never accurate from the factory.I havn't bothered to chase it as I have dual tanks.
