Dad bought this truck new w/manual column shift, and later, my youngest son (then a teenager)pulled out the column shift and put in a floor shift that is a disaster..looks like the ring gear could be one problem, but the whole set-up is flawed.

Now my eldest son is trying to revive the old gal and figure out what options he might have to put in a decent floor shift since the hole has already been cut, or whether it would be wiser to go back to column shift (orig.parts are long gone!).

The old truck is family...had an engine rebuild about 20,000 miles ago...so, we want to get it running again after being parked for almost a year. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks.

Granny, shifters are sold in kits, and should have every thing needed. A new kit may be the easiest way to correct the mess. I have a floor shifter from one of my donors and don't have a clue as to what is or isn't there.

Thank you, John. Didn't mean to include ring gear as part of shifting problem, just another problem.

If another kit is the best solution, surely there is something better than the one-size-fits-all Ford, Chevy, whatever transmissions, which this thing was. Are there shift kits made specifically for a 3-speed Ford truck(s)? Or just better kits?

Sure do appreciate the help.

From experience with my 67' Bronco you will get what you pay for. I was very happy with the B&M floor shifter for the 3spd. Summit or PAW should offer many models that will work nicely. They can get expensive.

Granny; I cringe every time I hear of someone converting from a column shifter to a floor shifter. Unless this installation is accomplished by someone that has experience, proper tools and a fair level of mechanical skills they are usually a mess. I am driving one of these now and I am in the process of un-doing this conversion. So I recommend you go back to a stock column. Get a good one from a junk yard and go through it and replace any worn bearings or other parts. Patch the hole in the floor (weld in metal), and replace the ruined floor mat. It is really nice of you and your son to keep this truck in the family. Let us know how this turns out.

Granny I would recomend going to the parts houses and look for the shifters made for pickup trucks. Mr. Gasket, Hurst, B&M are some that come to mind. One of the reasons to go to floor shifting is for more positave shifting, because you don't have the distance and as many different parts to be moved as with the column shifter. It could be that the shifter just needs to be adjusted.

The best cure for a sloppy 3 spd. shifter is to convert to an automatic, that's what I did. :-)

Granny.
I might have missed it, but is the truck a standard shift or an automatic? I just got the Lokar floor shift for my C-6 automatic and it looks great. They are about $180.00 but the workmanship and looks are worth twice that much.
It looks like it belongs in a truck instead of one of those hot rod car units, and the stick comes in different lengths. I suggest the 16" model because it comes up high enough to reach in a truck.

Dear Robert, William, John, and Skip,

I was soooo surprised to find so much help with this problem. Got back on here tonite and wow! Thank you all so much.

Have to say, William, I am of a mindset to wish my youngest son had left it original...but did anyone ever hear of one that age that can go with original stuff?)) I would go back in a heartbeat, if I had my druthers.

I also agree with you, John, on the shifting ease w/floor vs. column shift...had mucho problems with loose linkage over the years and my guess is that floor shift "should" eliminate that if done right. Even remember one time finding the shifter on the column wired on with a pipe cleaner...sheez, this old gal has been through it, but still smilin' (albeit a bit catiwampus).

Alas, Robert and Skip, (oh, it IS a 3-speed)I think finding one of the units you guys talk about is what my eldest will end up doing, since my mechanicing days are past (yep...was really good at it too once upon a time). But just in case I ever get to drive the old bird, I like the idea of a 16" stick.

Thank you all so very much. And yes, I will most definitely let you know how this works out. What a great place this is.

Warm regards to all,
Granny
