I have a 2000 F-150 4.6L Sport 4x4 Ext cab and it has drum brakes on the back. I was talking with my Uncle and he mentioned that I should get them converted to disc brakes in the back. Is there anyway of doing this? Are disc brakes better than drum?
Once I'm out of college I'm going to be starting up my own mobile motorcycle repair type deal so I'll be pulling a trailer daily. Of course that'll be a few years but I'm trying to get ideas and prices for it now.
I've towed trailors for yrs with drum brakes. Never a problem. If you want good braking while towing buy a trailor with electric brakes. This will help much more than converting your truck to disk rear brakes. Plus it will cost much less.
I'll probably do that then. But if I still decide that I'd like to have disc brakes in the back, what would that entail me doing, how hard would it be, and how much would it cost?
It would not come cheap and it probably would be easier to find a salvage axle with the disc's on it.
With all the things you will be worrying about you could take this one off your list. Getting your ABS sorted out would be another challenge after the conversion.
There's a company that manufactures a convesion kit. I found them through Google but the investment is about $1,000 if I remember correctly. I agree with the other posts that the return is not worth the investment. The drum brakes work fine when they are working properly.
