which welder???
A cheap ARC machine can handle 1/2" steel easily and is good for building up repairs with things such as cracks. You get a better variety of fill material too.
A MIG is the easiest to use, but, to handle a 1/2" steel easily you need a seriou$ machine. Though a good one will be able to MIG weld sheet metal just as easily, you can usually hook up a spot welder easy enough, or even weld aluminum.
A 10+ year project, that sounds about right for a vehicle when you started with two years in mind. What do ya want, quality or quanity, takes time to think out projects?
The 38 sounds cool, I always wanted to Tig up a 4130 tube frame for a 48 F-1 with a stroker Windsor motor, tubed rear with torsion bar suspension all around.
Just think of all the little toys you can build / weld up for you little one, congrats.
Get ready to buy a larger refrigerator as growing kids can eat. My son turned 15 and now at 6'1" and quits eating only when sleeping, daugher at 12 the same and they're both thin. Take care "dad".
