I've got a 68 f100 and i'm building a 460 for it. What trannies will work good behind a 460. I'll only be driving it 2-3 days a week with an ocassional trip to the track. I want something with overdrive so i can use lower gears to get off the line quiker, but still save gas and cut back on engine wear when i'm cruising.
Its also gotta be less than $2000.
I was thinking about a t5 but people said those r too weak. But the heaviest thing i'd ever haul is a 4 wheeler. And my trucks kinda light being a short wheel base. Can yall help me out?
A later ZF would be the best thing, it's got a pretty deep first gear, and a decent overdrive. Can be a little spendy, and you need to modify your truck for the hydraulic clutch, but all pretty easy. I'm putting one behind a built 300-6 for hauling, so by late summer I'll have the full scoop on the upgrade.
I run a built 460 with A/T, a 3.00:1, 9", 31 spline, 4 pinion differential on 31.5" tires.
It turns 2675 +/- RPM @ 70 mph. I have been in the mid 12's @ 120+ in the 1320. . .
It is not an O/D because drag racing causes O/Ds to puke even if you do not engage them as you race. . . The split output shaft & planetaries/suns don't take torture very well. And FWIW mine is faster with the A/T than with manual. Plus I got no clutch to worry about or mess with. . . .
I suspect my 460 makes 450 HP @ 4200 RPM & 575 lb/ft (+/-) torque at 3500 RPM. I also don't plan to go back to any other combo.
I can live with 16+ Mpg ( if I keep my foot out of it) letting the power do its' thing in the street. If I hammer it I might get 10-12 mpg in the street. I built my D1VE based 385 series for low end & Midrange torque.
I thought about using a c6 with a shift kit and manual valve body. But would a c4 be better? I'm trying to keep the weight down as much as possible.
Right now i've got 3 on the tree. And I thought about getting an over drive/underdrive unit to put behind it. I figure that tranny would work cause they used them behind FE engines. And cause my truck is the only vehicle i've ever seen with 3 on the tree. Would the colum shifter get in the way of headers?
Also I forgot to say that i'm running 26" tires that are about 10-12" wide.
Thanks again for all the help.
