boiling overfill

My coolant resevoir was boiling when I got home today. It's overspilled a couple of times before after I've shut the truck off, but I've never noticed it boiling. The level in the resevoir was also far above the COLD FILL line.

What you guys think? The thermostat is a 208*. Should I go lower? Plugged line? Water pump? Ideas ideas please. Thanks.

EDIT: When I park the truck it's almost overfilling the resevoir. By 30 minutes later, the resevoir is completely empty. Ideas?

Probably a stuck T-stat. Pull it out put it in boiling water & see if it opens.

About 15 years go I got 2 bad T-stats in a row, since then i've been running 180 degree stats from the Toyota dealer in my Taurus & Ranger. No more T-stat problems.

Are you sure yours is a 208 degree?? I would'nt run it that hot.

bahhh I REALLY don't want to get in there again getting to that T-stat was a total pain in the *** last time I did it. I love my 4.0L for the power but I hate it for that. I'm taking the alt off this time. Thanks for the suggestion I'll give it a shot and go get a lower temp one.

You should be running a 195 degree stat in there. If you lower the stat temp, there is the possibility that it will not go into closed loop operation. I'd have to pull a book and try to find the temp that the EEC goes into closed loop, but it really doesn't matter. If it does kick into closed loop, most likely the EEC system will try to compensate for the incorrect stat; you also face the possibility of lower gas mileage.

*I didn't even know that a 208 was available............

Make sure the T-stat is facing the right way when you install it.

All is well and done. It was much quicker and easier this time, with experience and help from a friend (a female friend no less!). I'd say all done in less than an hour and a half, including boiling the previous thermo to see if it operated (it did...eventually) and running the truck with the new one up to temp.

I got a 198* thermostat from O'Reilly's. It was the only one they had, no other temp options. I did make sure it was installed the correct way.

I want to shoot the Haynes people. The vehicle they show this procedure in (I didn't even bother referencing it this time around) doesn't have A/C, and therefore no A/C hose in the way. And the wiring loom that went across mine didn't seem to exist in their vehicle either. It didn't take long.

Tommorow I'm going to get some pictures and do a write-up on replacing it, since there isn't one in the tech thread. I'm not sure if it will get there though, I was told my shock replacement thread was going in there but it never did.

One thing...is there anything you can safely cover the throttle body with to run the engine without the intake tube so you can easily watch the thermostat?

A radiator flush may also be in order, due to it being partially clogged with corrosion.

I flushed the radiator over the winter when I did something else to it. I don't remember what, but either way it was flushed recently, so I believe it's aight. Looks great inside.
