'93 4.0 won't start...

Parked it last September and it ran fine. Had been driving the wife's old car (since it had working AC, power everything, etc) and have since decided to get rid of her car and get back into the truck.

Went to start it up, and the battery was dead...OK, no big deal. Hooked it up to the charger, and it turns over, but doesn't start. Did not hear the fuel pump start when I turned the key, so I ended up replacing that.

Still doesn't start. My stepfather says he got fuel up to the engine, but didn't say where.

Any suggestions? I'd like to get it back on the road. I'm wondering if the controller for the fuel injection is bad, and is causing the ports not to open. Is that the ignition control module? I've looked in the manual (Haynes) and can find no hint of what controls the injectors.

Thanks in advance for your help!

David

If you ground the fuel pump pin at the EEC Test connector under the hood you can bypass the FP circuit and manually run the pump. This should ensure fuel at the rail.

That would leave spark. Have you checked for it at all the cylinders? Also, have you tried pulling codes?

Since it was dead and you can't get it to start I don't see it registering codes, just my thought.

That being said. Check for fuel delivery. If the fuel pump doesn't work, check the trip switch (inertia switch) under the passenger side carpet. Then bypass as shown.

Check spark on all cylinders, and are your fluids ok? Just a thought...if it's been sitting it could be bad gas, and you need to change the oil and stuff.

Not an unreasonable thought Zack. However, an electronic ignition system can cause codes to be stored while cranking, regardless of whether the engine ever actually turns over.

Suffice to say, it's always worth pulling codes.

Not really correctamundo on that. EEC-IV can and will display KOEO codes in the event of failure of certain components and on a no-start engine. On that note, KOEO codes should be pulled and evaluated after it's determined there is fuel delivery and spark. No spark might be corrected by pulling and addressing KOEO codes too. Ignore any CM codes until all KOEO codes are addressed.

*Be aware that both the EEC and FP relays are somewhat prone to failure in these vehicles. They should not be overlooked in your preliminary diagnosis, failure of these can result in no spark or no fuel.

Thanks for the info, guys!

The truck is still dead, have replaced the ignition pack (had a burnt connector), and from what I've been able to find out, it's either those pesky relays or the PCM itself that's gone bad (which might explain why I couldn't pull codes...it probably got damp from the weather down here and something corroded).

Will try the relays ASAP to see if that works, shouldn't be too expensive. If not that, then will have to procure another PCM somewhere. Anyone have one for a '93 XLT 4.0 V6 extended cab 4x4?

Pulled the PCM, opened it up and Lo! and behold, there's a dime-sized burn mark on the board. I can't even identify which component blew up, but I'm wondering what caused it to occur before I put in another one. I DO need to get it running so I can get rid of a few cars here...since I have another one (1977 Pontiac Can Am) arriving around the end of the month. I hope I can get it to just the CA, my wife's minivan, and the Ranger....

Replaced the PCM, coil pack/ignition module (and the battery for good measure), and it fired right up! Took the satellite radio out of the '92 Grand Prix and popped it into the Ranger, only took a few hours to install. Would have driven it to work but I noticed that the brake lights on the bed weren't lighting - since I'd checked the fuel pump and had removed the bed to do it, I'm pretty sure it's nothing more than an unconnected plug. Just have to get under there while there's some light...more later as things progress.

Got a few more things taken care of...

Took the truck to the repair shop to have them replace a blown AC hose assembly. Found it was spewing 134a all over the alternator. Also having them bleed the clutch (found a bad master cylinder, too) and getting the shifter tightened (bushing was about shot).

So far, I'm into the truck for probably around $1500 in parts and service above the ordinary fluids and filters...not bad for a free truck. Now my wife wants me to go get fencing... .

You have now discovered teh number one reason just storing vehicles is not always a good idea, amazing things can happen even when it's just sitting not doing anything. But something I personally would definatly check is all the wiring throughout the entire truck, mice have a field day with insulation, for some reason they love the stuff and that can cause more gremilins than you can shake a stick at.

Stick shaking is fun.

Anyway also check your brake lines. they tend to rot out. Check Everywhere on them. even if you still have them. one day you could step on the brakes and wam, no brakes. do a fuel line check too. make sure there aren't any nests anywhere either. mice chipmunks and birds love making them in cars. On year my cousin went to start his truck but it wouldn't it had bee sitting all summer and he wanted it for the winter. but it wasn't starting, took the airfilter off, and found about 3 lbs of acorns stuffed in the air filter box.
