just aquired a 1971 f-250 camper special with 39000 documented miles. even the ac is still cold. trouble is that it has been setting in a garage since 1991. motor starts and runs, holds good oil pressure and everything, but it misses under idle, and pops and backfires when given gas. I drove it home, and runs pretty good except for this. reset points to .17, and wouldnt even start. backed down to 14, and starts right up. has a miss on #4 cylinder. changed plug, and wire, but nothing. will level out at higher rpms, but misses at idle. put sheet of paper over exhaust, and it blows it away instead of sucking it in when it misses. what should the timing be set on, and could my acceleration trouble be bad points and condensor? Please help
have not run compression test yet, it was next on the list. also need to change oil and filter in it. is there any type of additive to use to help free a stuck valve? was going for new points and condensor, cap, plugs and wires also. just havent done it yet.
Skip the points and condensor and convert to electronic
I suggest a Pertronix module. Verify engine condition with a compression test. The carb could be a little gummy after 14years storage. The Autolite/Motorcraft carbs are ez to work on. Most of your idle circuit is built into the booster body which can be removed with the carb in place.Sometimes some strong carb cleaner will do the trick...
One quart of Marvels Mystery oil and 4 10W30s along with a new filter should do the trick. I recommend staying away from the 20w50, that is way out of speck for our trucks. IMHO
just thought i would try something, so i started truck, pulled wire off plug that wasnt firing, stuck new plug in wire, and fireing was real random, and an orange color instead of blue. i will go with new wires, and plugs, points and condensor. this should get it to firing right along with your suggestion on marvel mystery oil, and 10w30 motor oil. it is a good feeling to know that someone out there still believes in these old trucks, and is willing to help. thanks a million, and keep posting responses!!
All of the new oils labeled Fuel Economy have virtualy zero zinc of phosphorous. Which you need for your older engine. I recommend Chevron Delo 15w-40 (diesel spec) or equivelant. these oils have all the good stuff still in them. If you don't believe me just check out Comp cams web site.
