52 Radiator

I have a 52 F-1 w/Mercury v-8 currently without a good radiator (it is useless) and I was curious as to what recommendations everyone has in radiator replacements. Am I pretty well stuck with either a stock replacement or expensive custom, or are there other options out there for these old flatheads. My ideal situation would be a bolt in replacement and i really don't have the tools needed for any big retrofitting jobs. Any help or opinions would be well appreciated.

U.S. Radiator should have what you are looking for. I am running their 4-row desert cooler in my '53 and it was a direct bolt in... even though my engine is not stock

Nothing wrong with a stock replacement "IF" your cooling system is clean, you run a shroud, and have good water pumps.

Anybody check out these radiators from "Cool USA" sold by
HotrodsUSA. http://www.hotrodsusa.com/store/cool.html

What would be the best application for the 51-52 mounts. The prices appear reasonable and aluminum.

Can you guys take a look and advice.

72 302 engine under my hood.

Thanks.

Their website is sure annoying with the header flipping back and forth - gives me a headache!
I didn't see enough info there to answer your question. The pickups from 42-52 use the same side mount that bolts to the U-shaped support. I'd say you'll have to call them with your question and your specific application. If you need to know the stock radiator size I'll be glad to post it.

I have one of their radiators in my '69 Cougar. I bought it at 8PM one night..... 4 days later it was on my porch! It's VERY well made. I plan to buy one of their radiators for the '56 when its time.

They don't make one for the original "4 hose" application, (2upper, 2 lower) when't down that road already.
re-cored my 4 row to a 5 core 4-hose set up. $490.

Guess I forgot to mention it was a flathead Mercury. My greatest interest was in finding a radiator setup that would work. If I found another radiator to bolt into place would it be possible to have a radiator shop add the outlet/inlet I need at the top and bottom. I really don't want to block off anything (heat) just to make a radiator work.

I just want it to bolt on my 51 U-support with no hassle. I can't beleive there has to be all this modification for this, especially with all those different radiators out there. I just want to right one to fit. No hassle.

Call U.S. radiator. When I ordered mine from them, they wanted to know what sides I wanted my inlets and outlets on and they didn't charge me extra to build it like I wanted. Either that or they have different combinations sitting on the shelf. Either way, it only cost the "advertised" price. They also advertise for custom building radiators on their site, too. Since they offer a direct bolt in for a '48-'52 Ford, it wouldn't be much harder for them to make one up for you if your Merc Flathead is that much different. All you can do is call and find out. Like I said earlier, the one I got from them was a direct bolt in. I originally had a 6-cyl and transplanted a 400 V8.

How much did that cost, because I don't want to spend over $400 for a radiator.
They are closed now.

I think it was in the upper $300 range, quite a few years back though. Problem is with these restorations, you sometimes don't have a choice when it comes to price unless you are willing to do some modifications. I got to the point on some of my other parts on my truck, where I couldn't believe some of the prices, so I either bought street rod related stuff or made my own parts. It's all part of the game, or whatever

I'll second that. The only real difference between a Merc and Ford flathead is that the Merc may be a stroker (haven't pulled a head to check). 23 & 3/8" was the measurement I took last night for the width of the area between the centers of the mounting bolts which is my entire available area to fit a radiator. If something newer and less worn than stock is available for cheap then I would love to get my hands on it. My biggest issue is finding some sort of setup that has the two opennings (4 total) at the top and bottom so that I can have both sides circulating water and not have to worry as much about overheating.
