i am thinking about getting my grandfather a 6637 for his excursion bit i heard they were loud??
how loud do they make the turbo and do u think he will notice a mileage change (if he works the pedal right) and is there a performance diff.
I went to my 6637 filter from an AFE Stage 1, and it's just a little too loud for me - I'm going to an AIS soon. Like Pocket said - it's the increase in other engine noise - not so much the turbo whine - that is making me go to another intake.
JUST an intake by itself - really won't gain you much of a "feelable" power difference - unless the filter you are replacing was really super dirty. The main reason for going to a bigger, better intake is to get more air to the engine, to be able to add MORE FUEL...
The stock filter flows plenty of air for a stock truck - otherwise stock trucks would be blowing clouds of black smoke all over the place.
An intake will make the engine better, but only if the intake it was replacing was undersized, poorly designed, or VERY restrictive.
The stock system on these trucks is neither undersized or very restrictive. It is poorly designed, but not in flow. The stock airbox is notorious for leaking by.
That said, it would be a benefit to change to a better intake, if only to prevent the leaky stock system from eventually destroying the turbo and motor. That was reason enough for me. If he's eventually going to go for more power than he has now, then a better intake will only help.
Do your research before choosing an intake. Most of the aftermarket ones wil make more noise, similar to the 6637. A lot use cleanable oiled filters. I won't let one of those within 10 feet of my truck, but I have my own reasons, and those reasons may not necessarily be yours. The general consensus here on this board is an intake with a disposable element, like the 6637 or the Ford AIS system.
well all he has done is a 50 hp hypertech programmer, so do u think this would help him or be could for his rig??
O ok - if he has a programmer - then a noticable increase is more likely.

Sadly - it's just not true. All the ads with those HP & TQ increases from an intake, or even an exhaust, just aren't quite true. You have to add FUEL AND AIR to a turbo diesel to gain performance, not just air. Now if you are over-fueling (with a tuner or chip), and blowing black smoke with a stock intake - then add a new high-flow intake - then YES, you will gain!! You will notice a power difference because you are now burning more fuel, instead of wasting it in the form of black smoke.
