Well, I have a problem, my a/c suddenly quit on my 94 ranger the other day. The compressor clutch is not kicking in and i have already replaced the clutch switch. , does anyone have any ideas? please help!
You need to determine if you have an electrical problem (trace the circuit with a VOM and it ain't hard or time consuming) or if you lost all charge. Neither is very difficult and will determine your course of action for repair. You can also apply 12V to the clutch to engage the system and rule out a low charge. Quick and dirty.
Find your accumulator and look for a low pressure switch on the side of it. Crank the truck and turn on the a/c.
Unplug the connector from the switch and jumper the two terminals of the connector with a paper clip or jumper wire. If your compressor kicks on your low pressue switch is not closing. DISCONNECT the jumper wire. You will ruin your compressor if you force it to run in this way.
The low pressure switch may not be closing for several reasons"
Low freon level and defective switch are the most common. If you don't own a set of refrigerant gauges you should probably take it to a professional or find a buddy that knows how to work on A/C.
Low freon levels are the most common cause of failure that I see, but there could be other problems such as a bad clutch, blown fuse, bad control panel, etc. A good a/c shop probably won't be cheap, but you could spend alot of money guessing and you can damage your system.
While we're talking about A/C here, let me pitch in my problem. Mine started going off a couple of weeks ago. Had the freon checked, but it was full. Mechanic said maybe it's freezing up, then when ice melts, comes back on. But, there's no rhyme or reason to the cycle. Sometimes when I start, there's no cool, and it may blow warm humid air for several miles before kicking in. When it does kick in, it blows cold. Then it may stay that way for the rest of the trip, or it may go off and come back on, or may go off and stay off. Seems to be getting more frequent lately, so maybe something's going out, but does anyone guess what it could be?

A/C finally quit working two days ago, which made it easier to diagnose. Turned out to be a bad clutch switch...$10.49 at O'Reilly...cool again! Mid-July...south Texas...A/C = necessity!
Kasey, hope you found your problem by now. BTW, the A/C fuse is #10 on my chart.
